Inspiring Conversations with Shilpa Dashpute of Nutrition with Shilpa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shilpa Dashpute.

Shilpa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
How I Got Here
My interest in nutrition began with a simple curiosity about what happens to nutrients inside the body—how they’re processed at the cellular level and how they ultimately support health. That curiosity deepened when several members of my family were diagnosed with diabetes, despite being active and maintaining what most would consider healthy eating habits. Their experiences motivated me to explore clinical nutrition and human biochemistry on a much deeper level.
How I Got Here
Although I already understood the importance of food and physical activity, I began to see that health is shaped by far more than diet and exercise alone. I wanted to understand why two people with similar lifestyles could have drastically different health outcomes. This search for answers led me to functional medicine nutrition, a discipline that looks beyond traditional nutrition by examining sleep, stress, toxin exposure, and even genetics. Functional medicine aims to uncover underlying causes and create personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies that support long-term wellness.
Years of intensive training under functional and certified nutrition professionals eventually led me to become a Board-Certified Nutrition Specialist. Throughout that journey, I developed deep expertise in gut health, cardiometabolic nutrition, sports nutrition, and nutritional genomics to help clients restore their health and feel their best.
I also had the opportunity to work alongside integrative cardiologists and internal medicine physicians in the Los Angeles area. These collaborations enriched my clinical perspective and strengthened my specialization in both cardiometabolic and gut health nutrition.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although from the outside this journey may appear smooth and straightforward, in reality, it was anything but easy for me. The path was filled with challenges, uncertainty, and moments of doubt. I struggled to find the right kind of training that truly resonated with my purpose, and for a long time, I questioned whether I was heading in the right direction at all.
Yet, through persistence and exploration, I eventually discovered the field of functional medicine and nutrition. That discovery was a turning point as it gave me not only the knowledge I had been searching for but also the confidence to move forward with clarity.  With this foundation, I finally felt empowered to help people on their healing journeys, guiding them toward health and well-being in a way that felt both authentic and impactful.

As you know, we’re big fans of Nutrition with Shilpa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Nutrition with Shilpa, I offer personalized nutrition services for individuals dealing with a wide range of health concerns. My work focuses heavily on gut health issues—such as bloating, gas, constipation, heartburn, and indigestion—as well as cardiac concerns like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, high Lp(a), and chronic inflammation. I also support people struggling with metabolic challenges, including prediabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance. In addition to this, I provide tailored nutrition guidance for athletes to enhance their performance and recovery.
For individuals who want to explore their health more deeply and avoid guesswork, I also incorporate nutritional genomics, which helps determine precision nutrition based on a person’s genetic profile.
My overall approach is rooted in identifying the underlying cause of each client’s symptoms. I closely analyze lifestyle factors, potential toxin exposures, and nutritional deficiencies to design a science-based, evidence-driven method.  I use advanced laboratory testing such as organic acid tests, stool analysis, advanced lipid panels, and nutritional genomic testing to develop sustainable, personalized nutrition and lifestyle plans.
Over the years, I’ve observed how chronic inflammation can quietly damage the body and contribute to non-communicable diseases. One example is inflammation-driven atherosclerosis, which can eventually lead to heart attacks or strokes. This understanding led me to develop a comprehensive Anti-Inflammatory Program. It dives deeply into food choices, lifestyle habits, and advanced testing to uncover the root factors contributing to chronic inflammation.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In nutrition practice, no two clients are the same. Each individual comes with a unique set of concerns, and uncovering the root cause can be a complex process. The risk of overlooking deeper issues becomes greater in situations where clients are struggling with emotional challenges or carrying unresolved trauma, which tend to be the biggest obstacles to recovery. I embrace this risk as part of the healing journey, supporting clients with compassion and care while also referring them to appropriate practitioners when specialized guidance is needed.
