Check Out Daniel Lamplugh’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Lamplugh.

Hi Daniel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a kid, I always wanted to be a longshoreman, so I moved to LA originally thinking I could get work at the port of Long Beach. However, within the first few months of living here, I found out I had a genetic disorder which makes me highly allergic to sea salt (because of the microbes). So, not sure about a next step, I floated around odd jobs in LA for a bit, including barista, children’s suit tailor, and still life model arranger. Eventually, I was helping a friend of mine who worked at a couture streaming company set up his desk in the company offices. And someone assumed I worked there, and assigned me a video to edit for marketing. I fumbled my way through it, and they just kept assigning me work, so I fell backward into a job there. Since then, it’s all been gravy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggles have been personal. Sometimes it’s hard to motivate yourself and push even farther and hard than before. I have so many film projects I haven’t finished or even started because I can’t find the motivation, and I feel like each extra day I wait, it’s less and less worth it to pursue.

But when you push past that feeling, and get to a finished project, it’s totally worth it. The satisfaction of a completed artwork is unmatched.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started working mostly in documentaries, which is what I’ve been most prolific in. I’ve also done some branded work in the digital space, but the things I’ve been most proud of are my passion projects with local musicians, helping them and supporting their art. Filming a YouTube series of in-house music sessions, or making music videos, I think that stuff really resonates with me as a fellow musician and music lover.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never give up! Trust your instincts!
