Today we’d like to introduce you to Yu “Yuey” Kito Lee.
Hi Yu “Yuey”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Looking back on my childhood, I realize I’m still very much the same person. I’ve always loved drawing and adventure stories, whether found in folktales, manga, video games, or travel essays. I think that mix of imagination, storytelling, and curiosity about the world really shaped who I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a straight path. Before becoming a freelance illustrator, I spent ten years in motion graphics working as a designer / animator, which I enjoyed a lot. It was only after having my first child that I decided to explore a new creative outlet. I’ve found that motion graphics and illustration share a lot in common though. They are both rooted in visual storytelling. I built my illustration portfolio bit by bit, often during my baby’s naps.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
These days, I mainly illustrate for children’s books and editorial projects. In my children’s work, I love creating adventures filled with everyday magic, unlikely friendships, and whimsical journeys. In editorial illustration, I focus on turning ideas into engaging visuals that connect people across cultures, often exploring themes of travel, history, lifestyle, and third-culture experiences.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If you think my illustration might be a good fit for your next project, I’d love to hear from you.
