Life & Work with Shani Amiel of Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shani Amiel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a young girl I always loved to take care of my skin, waxed myself and did make up on myself for hours. I started shaping my friends eyebrows when I got to Junior High School, I asked my girlfriends to grow their brows out so I can reshape them according to their face shape. I loved to play around with everything beauty but once I graduated High School I enrolled into Beauty School in Fallbrook. I fell in love with every new assignment that we were given especially facials. I loved pampering my clients and making their skin glow. I also felt so relaxed and thought wow what I fun career this could be. Once I graduated Beauty School I got my first job at a Day Spa in Sherman Oaks. I was only 19 years old and all my future clients were in their 40s of course I felt a little intimidated but I went along with my passion for skincare. I remember my first client ever was seeing me since her Esthetician was out for the day. I was nervous of course but kept a smile on my face and did my job, I waxed her head to toe and shaped her brows since thats my favorite. Later that day I heard that the client was so happy with me and even said she’d love to see me in the future. 3 years went by working on commission and I thought to myself I need to work for myself and not on commission. So I went off and rented a room at Capella Salon and most of my clients followed me there even my first client from the Day Spa. I was only 21 with my own business, clients and all the responsibilities and I loved it! In 2016 I had some life changes, I got engaged and moved to Boca Raton, Florida. My clients were not happy with the changes so we compromised that I’d fly into LA every 3 weeks to keep up with their eyelash extensions and beauty needs. That got tiering but did it till I moved back to California. When I came back I needed to invest more time in growing my business and gaining new clients and I did . March of 2020 came and salons were on shut downs do to COVID-19 Estheticians were especially effected and I couldn’t work for months. So in July of 2020 my ex husband and I decided to move back to Florida and see where life takes us. I worked with his family business on Worth Ave. in Palm Beach selling high end jewelry but I was still craving my passion of skincare. I was able to get an Esthetician job with SAKS but that didn’t do it for me. I looked around some plazas in my area and found a cute room in a salon where I could have my own business again. I was so happy with the location and the price so I signed the lease and started decorating. Luckily it was easy to get my Esthetician License in Florida since I had so many required hours through California State Board. I was so happy with my new business and clients found me quickly since I had great reviews online. But a couple of months later we had a new salon owner who wanted to tear down my skincare room and add more hairstylists to the salon which would mean my time there would be done and I’d need to find a new “home”. Long story short I worked from home for a bit and shortly after my dad passed away and my marriage ended. I was lucky to still have my suite at Capella Salon but my room turned into storage during COVID. I purchased all the necessary equipment all over again, supplies and products and started to renovate the room. I gave the room a makeover and changed the theme to go along with my new life and energy. Im grateful for my brother Shai and his wife Nicole to give me the chance to have my suite back and have my own business again. I’ve been with Capella Salon since 2001 with a few moves and changes but it’ll always be home!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a smooth road but when life happens you need to go along with it and believe everything is meant for a reason. My type of business can’t afford moves, shut downs, writers strike and fires. Unfortunately all these obstacles effect our business and income.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m definitely known for my brow shaping, eyelash extensions and relaxing facials. The fact that I was bio coastal for my clients says a lot I believe. My eyelash extensions are beautiful and settle, where my clients get asked how their lashes are so beautiful. When you cant tell eyelash extensions are fake then you know they look fabulous! My facials are also thorough but so relaxing. Clients always say they have arrands to run after their facial but that never happens. They want to go home and relax for the rest of the day. My clients are comfortable with me and we can talk for hours even when they’re just getting their hair done and not seeing me for a service.

What matters most to you?
Making sure my clients are happy, comfortable and get what they came in for.
