Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Tellez.
Hi Rudy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Honestly, it all started as a hobby; just me taking photos of my younger brothers in our living room on my first-gen iPod Touch. I didn’t think much of it back then, but something about capturing those little moments made me fall in love with the craft of photography.
In high school, I started taking pictures for friends, school dances, local events, anything I could get my hands on. Those early moments really shaped me. One small gig led to another, and before I knew it, I was photographing weddings, family portraits, quinceañeras, and large events.
Fast forward a few years, and my work has evolved into more editorial and portrait projects for brands, magazines, and companies. But the biggest milestone so far has been opening my first photo studio this year — right on the famous Whittier Blvd.
What makes it even more special is the location. My grandmother actually had her clothing factory on this same street years ago. I have these vivid memories of running around her factory as a kid, weaving between sewing machines and now, here I am with my own business on the same block. It feels full circle in the best way. This year marks about ten years since I first picked up a camera, and it’s surreal to see how far that little hobby has taken me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Because I started so young, about 15 years old, I often felt like I was constantly competing with the next creator or photographer. There were times when that pressure pushed me into a box I didn’t really fit in; trying to keep up with trends or do what everyone else was doing just to feel relevant.
Eventually, I had to take a step back and remind myself why I started. Once I stopped comparing myself and focused on creating from my own perspective, things began to shift. I found my own rhythm, my own style, and a deeper appreciation for the process.
I’m still learning every single day; that’s honestly one of the best parts about this journey. There’s always room to grow, evolve, and try new things, and I don’t think that curiosity will ever stop for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started my career focusing solely on photography, but over time my role naturally evolved into more styling, graphic design, e-commerce marketing and now I proudly identify as a Creative Director. What sets me apart is my approach: I prioritize creating a comfortable, transparent environment for everyone I work with, fostering a safe space where creativity can thrive.
Some highlights of my work include photographing for major brands like Fashion Nova, Forever 21, Starbucks, and the Hyatt Group. Beyond photography, I’ve assisted with styling and concept development for music projects involving artists such as Bad Bunny and Beyoncé, including brainstorming ideas for videos and tours.
I’ve also built and creatively directed multiple brands, overseeing everything from e-commerce strategy to the visual identity and creative campaigns. Essentially, I get to do it all and I love it. I bring a holistic, hands-on approach to every project, blending artistry, strategy, and collaboration.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people who know my work probably don’t realize that behind all the photoshoots and creative projects, I genuinely enjoy taking the time to get to know clients and partners. I want to understand their story and the “why” behind what they do not just to create the best ideas for a project, but to connect on a personal level. I’m not just pressing a button and sending photos; I’m creating lasting memories that are unique to everyone’s story, and that’s what truly drives me.
