Conversations with Magaly Barajas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Magaly Barajas.

Hi Magaly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I first got into photography back in high school. At that time, I was convinced I wanted to be a photojournalist. I was obsessed with the stories those photos told, so I went on to major in photojournalism. That same year I got my first camera and haven’t put it down ever since.

Once I really dove into photojournalism, I realized my heart was pulling me in another direction. I found myself more drawn to portraits and couples. That way of seeing and telling stories stuck with me and it’s a huge part of how I photograph weddings today. During my last year, I photographed a friend’s wedding and that was it. I knew this was what I wanted to do. Photographing people in love just felt right, and that’s what led me to where I am now.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been easy. Getting into wedding photography with no experience was intimidating. Photographing someone’s wedding is a big deal, and learning how to run a business at the same time was a whole other challenge.

When I started, I didn’t know anyone in the industry, and as an introvert, that made things even harder. Putting myself out there, meeting people, and building connections felt so uncomfortable in the beginning. But over time, I learning to push through the awkward moments and find my own way of doing things.

There were plenty of times I questioned if I was really cut out for this, but I can’t see myself doing anything else. Starting this business was scary, but every step forward, no matter how small, has been worth it. It took a lot of trial and error to get here, but each challenge taught me something new and helped me grow into the photographer I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I photograph weddings and family sessions, focusing on real connections, genuine emotions, and the little details that make each story unique.

I’m proud of being able to create images that feel personal and meaningful. Being family-oriented shapes everything I do. I love capturing not just the big moments, but the quiet, heartfelt interactions between loved ones that make each story special.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just take photos, I create a space where people feel comfortable being themselves. My approach is relaxed, warm, and all about highlighting the relationships that matter most. Every session is about telling their story in a way that feels fun and timeless.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was starting my photography business. There was no guarantee it would work, but I knew I’d regret not trying. Every step I took, booking my first wedding, raising my prices, putting my work out there, came with uncertainty. But each risk pushed me to grow. I’ve learned the best things happen when you step outside of your comfort zone.
