Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Morrow.
Hi Julia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve owned a mobile massage and Lymphatic Drainage therapy business for 21 years. My first career was as a Sign Language Interpreter. As my interest in that career was waning, I looked around for what else I wanted to do and finally remembered being a young teen and telling my friend that one day I was going to be a massage therapist. I went to massage school and did both jobs for several years until I retired from interpreting. I love helping people get healthy, love meeting clients in their homes, and I even love meeting their pets!!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a business owner, the struggle to do everything myself is very difficult: the constant marketing, taking care of my home and pets, lots of business computer work. taking online or in person seminars, reading professional journals & research articles, washing business sheets, lots of driving to client’s homes, the occasional creeps who call/text wanting that “other” kind of massage, and just being physically strong enough to do the work, which is like exercising for several hours a day, as well as being able to lift my 30-lb table in and out of the car and into people’s homes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When I went to massage school, I always knew I wanted to be a mobile therapist focusing on the medical aspect of the work instead of working in a day spa. It is very enjoyable working on a large variety of clients/patients such as those with fibromyalgia, cancer, Lyme Disease, Lupus, Lipedema, Lymphedema, pregnancy, geriatrics, post cosmetic surgery patients, etc. as well as healthy people who want Swedish massage or Myofascial Release to decrease musculo-skeletal pain, increase range of motion and decrease mental stress. What has really touched my heart are the times over the years when I’ve been invited to do hospice massage.
Many of my clients are cancer survivors. I’ve taken several oncology massage classes for both outpatient and inpatient massage and really enjoy this work! One day per week I work at WeSPARK Cancer Support Center providing oncology massage and Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD). I also see many patients in their homes. Both massage and MLD are safe for cancer patients, as long as they see someone like myself who is trained in both modalities.
I also have specialty certifications in the area of lymphatic work: I’m a Vodder method Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist and also a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. I’m one of only 3 mobile certified therapists in the SFV and the only one covering the SCV. (Vodder method is the gold standard in most places around the world for lymphology.) Because of these certifications, I am qualified to work on the general public who want to boost their immune system, improve auto-immune or gut issues, to decrease swelling, or people with Lipedema, Lymphedema, or cosmetic surgery patients needing properly done gentle Lymphatic Drainage to speed up their healing and decrease the risk of scar tissue forming.
A few months ago, as a result of conversations I’d had with several post-op patients, I began a post-surgical concierge caregiving service to assist patients the first day or two after a procedure. I am available for transportation home from the hospital, and help them into their bed, I can cook meals for them, help with mobility to the bathroom, take care of their pets, and also do gentle massage and/or MLD to speed their healing and take the pain levels down. Sometimes patients don’t have anyone at home to help them immediately after surgery, or don’t want family or friends to know they’ve had a procedure, so I’m happy to help with that!
