Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizzie Horvitz.
Hi Lizzie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the sustainability space since I was 16, and fell in love with climate mitigation when I was lucky enough to live off the grid in the bahamas, surviving off of wind power, biodiesel-run trucks and solar panels. I saw this beautiful way of living before I fully grasped how scary the impacts of climate change can be, and saw the solution before I fully understood the problem. Fast-forward to 2020, after having dedicated my career to climate mitigation in the private sector, I began getting so many questions from family and friends about what personal choices could be made to help sustainability. People were curious about everything from their paper towel purchase to becoming a vegetarian, and I didn’t know towards where to point them. The internet was filled with sponsored mommy-blogs or scientific papers and not much in between. This was the birth of Finch – a hub where consumers can better understand their decisions and make the science around sustainability a little less intimidating.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finch has taken on a lot of iterations, from a small “media”-based company, to scaling into a venture-backed tech organization with 8 employees, and now back to a small, independent organization. Each pivot has come with its own challenges, which were often exacerbated by where I was in my own life. We’ve taken a short hiatus to regroup but I’m really proud of where we landed today and I’m not sure that would have happened without the struggles along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I help people navigate the world of sustainability. I focus on both what they can do as individuals to make an impact, and I help explain often complicated aspects of climate change. Our team covers everything from what mascara to buy, to what to do with your empty lotion containers, to what PFAS actually means. There are few people in the space who can relate to everyday people and give concrete, often baby-step information that helps people feel better about the impact they have.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think on the macro level, we’ll be seeing a lot more regulation, reporting and accountability. This is already happening in Europe but we’ll see increased supply-chain transparency, nature disclosures and standardization of sustainability reporting. I think we’ll also see a rise in circular economy and regenerative practices, going beyond “less bad” and actually “actively good.” Of course, we’ll also see a lot of clean energy progress and nature-based solutions. Finally, AI will play a huge role in sustainability (and everything!). WE’ll see more monitoring, real-time data, predictive modeling and “green IT.” The US government isn’t helping with these trends right now, but they’re coming regardless.
