Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Lovett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We’ve all got a story. Mine begins with the love of telling other people’s stories. When I was 10 or 11, I found out about a local theater company show and wanted to audition. The part I wanted was the Irish maid, so I learned an Irish accent by imitating the Lucky Charms guy from the cereal commercial. They wouldn’t give me the part because it wasn’t a play about child labor, but that was the start of my lust for words and accents and transformation through acting – living in another person’s skin, (nevermind walking in his/her shoes – what size?! I got this!).
I went to the Juilliard School in NYC and got a BFA in the 90’s. Back then, our teachers pooh-poohed everything but “The Theatre” – movies, TV and commericals were gauche pursuits treated with mild disdain, and I willingly swallowed that Kool-Aid. (Oh, the things you wish you knew when you were 23!) After being gifted roles like Laura in the Glass Menagerie and Shakespeare’s Cleopatra (Antony and Cleopatra) on regional theater stages, I moved to LA.
Fast forward 10 years later and I’m just finding my familiars – folks who just want to work on telling stories in a transformative way. I teach and coach – both actors and business professionals – and it all comes down to being in your own skin so you can truthfully embody stories whether it’s your own or someone else’s.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m not sure what “smooth road” even means? Your life is your road, your maze your waterfall and your jungle – it’s all just what it is, no? I think the struggles we have are about trying to fit into molds and being impatient or even indignant about how others are supposed to respond to us. When I was acting fulltime, I was always inner-battling around the idea of doing what “they” (supposedly) wanted and what I actually was. It’s silly, really and yet I remember many tears and frustration over it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Speak Well or Lauren Lovett Coaching story. Tell us more about the business.
I hang my professional shingle out as a voice/presence empowerment coach (honestly, I am still tinkering with a consumable title).
I’m a coach/mentor/teacher and my main intention is to give you the tools and confidence for whatever you want to do in your life. How I do that is through seeing where your thoughts disconnect from your body, where natural patterns have been interrupted through trauma (physical or emotional or both).
If you’re an actor we can work on anything from taking on a dialect (I’ve got a few more besides the Irish now) to embodying a totally different life from your posture to your voice to the energy you have when you walk into a room. If you’re a business professional we can work on anything from your vocal production and articulation to giving your overall presence an engaging vitality you may not have known you have.
I’m probably proudest of my ease (and excitement) around customizing a program for whoever is in front of me with great results.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
You know, I’m not sure if I believe in luck. I have had many privileges due to where I was born and having all of the basics and more etc., but I don’t know that I’ve had the sensation of a stroke of good/bad luck (except for the Lucky Charms guy who started it all!).
