Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Meaux.
Hi Shawn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all began with reupholstered vintage chair. After submitting a mid century, vintage chair that the owner had reupholstered for an Architectural Digest contest for creative use of fabrics in 2010, he won the international competition and Neo Vintage Decor was born. Initially an online retail/design services business, a brick and mortar retail location opened on Melrose Av later that year, specializing in curated vintage furniture (updated & vintage), original artwork, accessories, and design services. The shop was recruited by many online platforms and sells to clients all over the country. Neo Vintage Decor recently moved to a new, larger location on the famed Route 66 on Santa Monica Bl in the heart of Hollywood and will be reopening later this Fall.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business and opening a retail store has been a challenging, but rewarding, endeavor. Being an entrepreneur requires much more than having a passion for doing what you do. It also requires resilience, hard work, and tenacity to learn what is required in order to survive, evolve, and thrive. Have there been bumps in the road? Absolutely . . . the Great Recession, online shopping adoption, the COVID Pandemic, civil unrest and looting, the LA Fires, building ownership changes & rent increases, just to name a few. Problem-solving is a big part of being a business owner. Regardless of the situation, it is in the response to them, the lessons learned from them, and the knowledge gained through them will transform struggle into success.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Neo Vintage Decor is a design showroom specializing in vintage furniture, artwork and accessories from different periods in different styles and finishes. Some of the vintage items are sold in original/as is condition while others have been refinished, re-stuffed and reupholstered to like new condition. Open to professionals and civilians alike, the shop has become a curated resource for great vintage furniture, decorative accessories and original artwork. We also have an online shop in partnership with Chairish making many of our offerings available to be purchased and shipped across the country.
How do you think about happiness?
Many things make me happy, but one of the of the things that makes me happiest is hiking Runyon Canyon. It brings me great peace of mind to be in nature in such a beautiful, awe-inspiring setting while getting in a brisk hike and jog. No matter how stressed or out of sorts I become, I always feel like a different person after a Runyon hike.
