Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Post.
Hi Chad, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From the time I was little I was infatuated by music. My mom would constantly have music on in the 90s in her mini van. Usually some power ballads of the sorts. I had a burning desire to be in the singing spotlight at that time, without having a name for it–just a feeling. When I was about 10, I began taking singing lessons. Around 15 or so I feverishly wrote poetry and very quickly pivoted that into songwriting. I realized very quickly how effortlessly I created melody and beats. At that time I would create word documents of hundreds of pages with lyrics and Garageband to record beats by just tapping and clapping. That is where all of my music started. When I started taking music more seriously I found a master vocal coach and perfecting vocal technique so that I could stand behind the songs I wrote, and be able to sing as I had always imagined. Fast forwarding a bit I started performing in New York pretty regularly and recording my own songs. In 2017 I released my first singles and EP. Since then I have steadily released dozens of songs, EPs, and 2 LPs, about to release my third full-length in the spring, which I am so excited about! Overall, it has always been about laying down stone after stone to lead me to the path I am on today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Speaking of the path! No, it has absolutely not been smooth, but I think in the long term that makes the journey more fun. In the short term, the journey seems full of so much waiting and endless setbacks. My biggest issue in the beginning was finding creatives who saw the vision for myself and were as committed to it as I was. That can be very daunting. Finding your people is so important who want to get the work done no matter what. I have that now which is truly such an honor. Career setbacks are part of the entertainment industry for sure. One time I had an entire EP scheduled to record in a studio and the entire project was canceled because the producer and the studio was rented out to the Marley family for two months. Well, DUH! But also, that then derails your whole rollout. Personally, I have gone through a lot of ups and downs in relationships which I am very grateful to be on the other side of. Those moments can be so stifling and can really set you back emotionally. Sometimes so much so that you don’t feel like getting out of bed or creating anything at all. Luckily, when I was able to, I forced myself to create and that was a bit of a savior. I think it’s very important to never stop making art, no matter what. I heard recently that the opposite of anxiety is not calm, it is creative and I think that is so true because it heals you and moves you forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
First and foremost I’ve always been a writer–but I write in many different mediums. My main medium is songwriting and singing, but I have a published book of poetry, screenplays, and novels (that are not out yet). I express myself through the visuals as well. I don’t just want people to listen to my music as a sound, but as an experience. I want people to be immersed in the experience and come into my world. I write, direct, photograph, and edit all of my visuals. I love the process of creating and being a visual artist so people can feel like they are a part of something bigger than just sound.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Shoot your shot! You never know where it can lead. I think you have to be as authentically you as possible and the right people will gravitate to you. People can sniff out when someone is disingenuous or you are ‘looking for something.’ Connect with people not because you want to get something from them, but because you want to connect and create something meaningful. My vocal coach has been a true mentor to me and that sort of fell into my lap to be honest. But, greatest ‘networking’ has happened from having genuine experiences with people that developed into working relationships. By establishing a relationship first without work involved, you can determine if you gel, and then the conversations will naturally happen and just roll. And then, the creative process is just as fluid as your usual vibe.
