Conversations with Anthony Buncab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Buncab.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Anthony Buncab is someone who is driven to create and share art through his teaching career and his own music. Having graduated from University of California, Riverside in 2020 with a BA in Fine Arts, Anthony soon found his desire to teach from his tutoring experience. Afterwards in 2021, he would then get accepted into UCI’s MAT program where he would earn his teaching credential and Masters. From Middle School to High School, Anthony has taught students of all ages the value of creating and doing art through work-based learning practices and project-based learning strategies. Currently, he now works and teaches in Orange County as a Art/Design teacher. This year would mark the beginning of his 4th year as a teacher.

In the music world, Anthony is becomnig known as his alias SHYY as an EDM songwriter, producer, and DJ in the Orange County, LA, and San Diego area. Having already played for iconic venues such as Catch One in Los Angeles and Heat Ultra Lounge in Anaheim, Anthony is quickly gaining recognition for his open-format skills and diverse blend of sound. Known not only for his solo work but also for his collaborations with fellow Los Angeles-based underground collectives such as Nightstate Underground and Soul Food Music Collective, Anthony intends to establish himself as a key figure in the growing Hardwave & Trap scene with his growing discography.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The work-life balance has always been a struggle given Anthony’s profession. Teaching a group of students then having enough energy to produce and build your craft at home requires a lot of discipline and willpower, but overall these are normal challenges that any aspiring creative will face.

Additionally, being active in the music scene and meeting other creatives has been a great way to see how we are all going through our own struggles yet we are still trying to make it all work.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mainly work as an independent artist that specializes in creating Electronic Dance Music (EDM). At the moment, I’m mainly in the realm of producing Trap Music and Melodic Bass. I would also like to add that I produce, mix, and master my own music and that has given me the skills to be part of music collectives that value that.

On the side I also have my own producer/DJ collective based in Orange County called Nightstate Underground. We are mainly a group of friends that developed the collective in 2020 and have gotten the chance to throw events in Los Angeles and Orange County.

At the same time, I also work for a music distribution collective/label called Soul Food Records. I mainly work as an A&R and CTO for exciting new artists that haven’t been released yet.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favoriate childhood Memory would probably be snowboarding at Mountain High when I was in Middle School. Not sure why, but I love snowboarding and that time is always stuck in my head.
