Community Highlights: Meet Chisato Hotta and Ligia Recinos of Kindful Place Therapy Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chisato Hotta and Ligia Recinos.

Chisato and Ligia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kindful Place Therapy Center was founded on a chilly November evening at a café, where 2 friends, Ligia and Chisato, were discussing names for their new counseling center. Kindful came from a blend of mindful and kindness – two things that Ligia and Chisato both practice and encourage their clients. Looking around the café, there was an aha moment- they wanted to create a therapy space that was like a café… a warm, safe space to just be present, a place to connect with ourselves or others. This is where “Place” came from- and the Kindful Place Therapy Center was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our big struggle is that we transitioned from community mental health to private practice, so we learned about a completely new part of mental health! We had to create our own forms, bring on our amazing team legally and ethically, while also getting people to know about us and our services. So it was and is a lot of balance and we are still learning!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Kindful Place Therapy Center was established in 2024 with the mission to provide mental health and consultation services in California. Our mission is to decrease the stigma of mental health by fostering a safe environment, like a café. We provide mental health therapy services to a wide range of people, including children. One of our niches is angry children, but we also love to work with people and families who are going through transitions, couples who are struggling to communicate and more! We also provide consultations to business such as workshops! We also provide support to other therapists because we believe the best supported therapists are the ones that do the best work and collaboration is key!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Starting this business was definitely a big risk! We went in to a completely new area, although we have worked in mental health for a long time, creating our business with our vision was a big risk and step for us! We are grateful that we are doing this together. Our risk was not creating this together, our risk was going in to a new business and figuring it out!
