Meet Jan Lim of V Spec Detailing + Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Lim.

Hi Jan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been around cars. My grandpa was a mechanic, and some of my earliest memories are of him in the garage, tools laid out, working on engines. My uncles and cousins were all into cars too, so that passion naturally rubbed off on me.

I actually studied architecture and built a career in professional video production that lasted nearly 15 years. It took me all over the world and I even had the chance to visit the production factories of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Pagani, and Aston Martin while filming a National Geographic series. It was an incredible experience for someone who’s always loved cars.

Eventually, I had to step away from that industry due to personal health reasons, and that’s when I turned to detailing. What started as therapy became something much more and a way to reconnect with what I’ve always loved. I went through formal training, got certified through the International Detailing Association, and earned both my Certified Detailer and Skills Validated accreditations. I trained under Renny Doyle, the official Air Force One detailer and a Hall of Famer in the industry, who became a mentor to me.

In early 2025, I launched V Spec Detailing + Care, a premium detailing studio built around passion, precision, and purpose. V Spec stands for ‘Victory Sepcification” which for me means to aim to be the best. It’s more than just making cars shine; it’s about creating something enthusiasts can truly be proud to be part of. What started as a personal journey has grown into a brand rooted in craftsmanship and community and it’s just getting started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road but that’s part of what makes it exciting. When I get into something, I go full-throttle. I’m the type to dive in 110% and give everything I have. Starting V Spec Detailing + Care meant becoming a student again and learning new techniques, refining processes, and constantly improving things that could always be better. That learning curve has been both humbling and rewarding.

One of the biggest challenges has been building a true detailing community. To me, V Spec Detailing + Care isn’t just a business that provides a service, it’s about creating a culture around care, trust, and pride of ownership. That kind of community can’t be bought; it’s something that’s earned through consistency, word-of-mouth, and reputation.

Right now, we’re also expanding V Spec Detailing + Care to include PPF and vinyl color-changing wraps, which is the next big challenge. The goal is to perfect it and integrate it seamlessly into the brand while maintaining the same high standards we’re known for.

And on a personal level, I’m learning to find balance again. I’m very dedicated to the craft, but my life already revolves around car culture from meets and friends to spirited drives and modifications. So, even while I’m finding that balance, it never really feels like work. It’s just who I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
One thing I really want people to understand is that not all “detailers” are the same. There’s a big difference between a car washer and a true professional detailer. At V Spec Detailing + Care proper technique and process are everything. We’re International Detailing Association Certified and Skills Validated, insured and I was personally trained by Hall of Fame detailer Renny Doyle, who’s best known as the official Air Force One detailer. That foundation of training and discipline is what defines the quality of work we deliver.

V Spec Detailing + Care is a premium detailing studio built around craftsmanship, integrity, and passion for car care. We specialize in paint correction, ceramic coatings, and tailored detailing from engine bays and door jambs to inner wheel barrels and interiors. Every car that comes through the studio no matter the make, model, or year, is treated uniquely and tailored to its specific condition and needs.

Beyond the detailing itself, V Spec Detailing + Care is deeply involved in the local car community. We collaborate with brands like Adam’s Polishes, and local car meet hosts, participate in charity events, and educate car owners about proper care and protection. It’s about more than just shiny paint, it’s about building trust and sharing a passion for automotive excellence.

Right now, our most popular services include decontamination washes, paint restoration, and ceramic coatings. And as we continue to grow, we’re expanding into paint protection film (PPF) and vinyl color-change wraps evolving V Spec Detailing + Care into a one-stop destination for premium automotive protection and aesthetics.

At the end of the day, what sets us apart is our obsession with quality, education, and community. V Spec Detail + Care isn’t just a detailing brand, it’s a culture built for people who truly love cars.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned on this journey is that you can’t rush art just like you can’t rush the growth of a tree. Everything takes time to evolve. Building a craft, a brand, or even yourself requires patience, trust, and consistency.

I’ve learned to be flexible, to navigate changes as they come, and to understand that the road to your goal isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes, it’s about trusting God, trusting your instincts, and letting your heart guide you even when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Every person you meet has their own story, and I’ve learned how important it is to really listen to stay open-minded and always take something valuable away from every interaction. All of it adds up. Every experience, every lesson, every setback helps shape you not just into a better business owner, but a better person and friend.
