Community Highlights: Meet Julie Scott (née Peterson) of Julie’s Homecooking

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Scott (née Peterson).

Hi Julie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been in the culinary industry for three decades & I feel incredibly
privileged to do what I do. I began my career as a ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ restaurateur – learning as my business grew. R&J Southern Homecooking Restaurant grew for 20 years in Downey CA, then I sold it with a loving goodbye. I became a certified Master Chef, joined the USPCA (official organization of personal chefs) & started my personal chef business, Julie’s Homecooking, in 2015.

I came into this niche corner of the culinary field armed with my restaurant experience & feeling completely vulnerable to certainty…but this part of my journey has been nothing short of a blessing! I’m deeply grateful for my training under Chef Eric. The confidence from my aquired knowledge & skills has been key in my confidence moving forward. I’m still growing, learning & thriving!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge in my business is time! I would like to order more hours in a day or more energy to get more done in the hours available. I’m always seeking ways to elevate my service & improve efficiency which can lead to fatigue. I’m learning how to practice resting & I’ve discovered how much better I perform when I’m rested.

I think my other challenges are similar to any business – making good use of slow seasons & staying current with my client’s interests. In my case, it’s food! Each client has a personalized menu which I create weekly so I definitely am challenged to keep their palates piqued while ensuring that their health goals & dietary restrictions are deliciously met.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Julie’s Homecooking offers personal chef services, private dinner parties & catering of all sizes. As a certified Master Chef with over 30 years in the culinary industry, Chef Julie is able to provide each client with globally expansive recipes & she is adept at creating specialized recipes to accommodate all dietary needs. She works closely with nutritionists & dieticians, helping clients reach their health goals whilst eating well.

Having a personal chef is a game changer! This service gives clients the gift of time, consistency & flavorful joy as every recipe is based on their own personal preference. All shopping, cooking & cleaning is done for you. You won’t have to lift anything but your fork.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Food is my first conscious love. I used to get in big trouble over food! Whether it was because I ate ALL of something or because I used all of the groceries to cook for my friends, I stayed in trouble with my parents.

I remember my grandmother discovering my stash of empty wrappers from all of the snacks she had in her pantry. I remember my dad opening the freezer to find that I had cooked all of the meat he had purchased from the PX. I remember my mom yelling my full name (Juliana!!) when she realized that I had consumed a month’s supply of cereal in a week. What can I say? I knew that me & food were in it for life lol! I make no excuses for being a true foodie – though I’m glad that my palate has matured.
