Today we’d like to introduce you to Cimone Metoyer.
Hi Cimone, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved baking since I was old enough to see over the counter. My mom baked a lot growing up. She used to give me pie crust to play with when she was working in the kitchen. I would fill it up with jam and bake it in my Holly Hobbie oven…I am dating myself 🙂 As I got older, she always supported to me learning and experimenting in the kitchen. At age 12, I started selling fresh baked cookies in brown lunch bags during summer breaks. Fast forward into my adult years, I opened my business out of my home kitchen in 2013. Jassy’s Sweets & Eats. Jassy’s is named after my daughter, Jasmine. I’ve grown my business since those early days into a dessert catering company that services mostly corporate clients and special events.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a small business owner is not for the faint at heart. It has taken an incredible amount of sacrifice, focus, dedication and mistakes to grow my business to where it is today. Many times, I have wanted to give up. I’m grateful for my supportive tribe that has encouraged me to get back up and keep going because “you’ve come too far!” With this business, it is easy for people to have a very romanticized idea of it. People think your hair is flowing in the kitchen with a cute apron on while you’re singing Disney songs. It is hard work! If I had to pinpoint one hurdle, it would be maintaining balance between my personal life and business. Making sure I am not sacrificing my health, peace of mind, my family for the sake of my business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artisan baker that specializes in small batch, high quality baked goods. Everything we produce is amazingly delicious. A lot of love goes into everything we bake, and you can really taste the difference. I take pride in my desserts being reminiscent of a beautiful time gone by. Buttercream frosting that tastes like your grandma used to make or peach cobbler like your mama made. I don’t skim on any ingredients. You can see the cinnamon on the peaches and taste the butter. The crust is made from scratch and not a frozen pie crust! Aside from delicious baked goods, I also take my clients very seriously. Providing my clients with amazing customer service is also the cornerstone of our business, which is why Jassy’s has a solid 5 star review average on Google. Our most beloved confection that we create is a Southern Pecan Bar. It’s very similar to pecan pie, but not as puckery sweet. It’s baked on a buttery shortbread crust with the caramelized sugar filling and the crusted pecans baked into the top. People go absolutely crazy for it. The Jassy brownie is also very beloved, and our cookies are in a class all by themselves.
What matters most to you? Why?
Expressing my heart and creativity through my work as a baker and a businesswoman is incredibly important to me. Everywhere you see people working jobs that they are miserable in and feel that they have no other choice. I have been that person too. It slowly kills the spirit.
