Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Torres.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Future Grass all started during college about 11 years ago. I was looking for work and really did not want to work at an hourly job getting paid minimum wage. So, I decided to create my own business installing turf. At first, I found good quality turf and ither installation materials, I then, found some installers at Home Depot and began posting ads on craigslist. I would go to class and then join my installers to work alongside them to learn the tricks of the trade. They weren’t the best, but they knew all the secrets to installing turf. As soon as I had perfected my installation skills, I was able to start my own crew. I became an expert foreman, but I started to get too busy with school and the business. So, I needed help… I found and taught a few guys to be foreman’s and created multiple crews of installers to keep up with the demand. I also hired and trained sales reps to help me sell the jobs and my mother-in-law Lisa to help me schedule the sales reps. I then brought on a long-life friend named Evan and my brother-in-law Justin as my partners to help in the day-to-day work. Now a days we have about a 40-person team and are the leaders in turf installation in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. We have expanded to doing full backyard remodels such as pools, paver, fire pits, walls, lighting, etc. We take pride in our work and love working with homeowners to help bring their dreams to reality!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to where we are today was definitely not the smoothest. It was difficult to balance time in the business with time at school. School was important to me, but so was Future Grass. One of the problems I face was thinking that no one could do the work I did because no one would care as much as I did. This was not true, once I brought on Justin, Evan, Lisa, and the rest of the team I realized with the proper people in place the business could run even better than it did with me all by myself. We definitely had a few growing pains, but today I would not change a thing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Future Grass?
Our business specializes in backyard remodeling. We Install artificial grass, pavers, pools, landscape, drains, walls, concrete, pergolas, fire pits, BBQs, and basically anything else that involves a backyard. What separates us from other companies is that we do everything in house. We don’t just sub everything out to other companies. Keeping all our work in house is was allows us to have the most competitive pricing in our industry. One thing I would like people to know about our company is that we pride ourselves in our work and we will never leave a job until our customer is satisfied with our work.
What are your plans for the future?
Our future plan for Future Grass is to grow as a company, but at the same time continue to do quality work and keep our customers happy. We would also like to expand to other cities and states one day.
