Hidden Gems: Meet Charlotte Kay of Charlotte Kay, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlotte Kay.

Hi Charlotte, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been intrigued by animals, so I studied biology in college since it was the closest program to zoology my university offered. Toward the end of school, I realized I was especially drawn to forensics and animal behavior, though I never pictured myself following Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey to Africa. After college, I spent fifteen years in environmental planning for the State of California while doing plenty of soul-searching on the side. I trained in massage therapy, completed yoga teacher training, and immersed myself in meditation. Eventually, that path led me to graduate school in counseling psychology. I’ve been licensed in California since 2014 and became licensed in Colorado this year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t necessarily a smooth road, no. After college, I felt completely lost—both in career and in myself—and landing a steady job didn’t fix that. Returning to therapy and beginning to really excavate some of the suffering was a turning point; it opened space to imagine other possibilities. I don’t regret any of the detours, though the pace felt glacial at the time. Friends nudged me toward psychology, and attending my first session at Pacifica Graduate Institute was the moment I finally felt like I was in the right place. Balancing full-time work with grad school was hard, but spending weekends holed up at home reading and studying was, honestly, pretty dreamy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a trauma-informed, somatic psychotherapist who integrates depth psychology, mindfulness, parts work, attachment theory, Brainspotting, and body-centered approaches.

My practice is sex-positive and culturally affirming. I work with adults, couples, and families, offering inclusive relational therapy for all forms of connection—romantic and partnered (including polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships), business partnerships, co-parents, chosen family, and workplace dynamics. I treat anxiety, attention and focus challenges, depression, trauma and PTSD/C-PTSD, compulsive behaviors and recovery, stress management, and relationship struggles. I also provide Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). I really enjoy helping clients translate insight into practical, heart-centered change.

I’ve studied human behavior in one form or another since my undergraduate years. I’m a seeker by nature and rarely leave stones unturned. Like many in this field, I’m a “wounded healer,” and I see that as part of what allows me to meet others with authenticity and empathy. The experiences I’ve lived and continue to metabolize inform my work and deepen my ability to understand and support others.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I can’t even begin to name everyone who has supported me and contributed to the success of my practice—but I’ll try. If it hadn’t been for three people simultaneously encouraging me to consider becoming a therapist, I’m not sure I would have gotten there on my own. Those three are meditation teacher, author, and podcaster Michael Taft; therapist Penelope Voekel; and my dear friend, Molly Frickelton. I also credit Michael for introducing me to Shinzen Young’s style of mindfulness, which, hands down, has impacted my life like no other.

Beyond the friends and family who have stood beside me, I am deeply appreciative of every single client who has crossed my path. The brave souls who say yes to inner work, who trust me, and who return week after week—they are the ones who have shaped me into the therapist I am today.
