Life & Work with Christopher Scott of SANTA CLARITA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Scott.

Hi Christopher, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Back in the summer of 2013, I started to write electronic music as a way to make custom music for the video games I was making at the time. Over time, I started to become more passionate about writing music, so I dropped my hobby of making games in order to focus on becoming better at writing and producing music. The next few years involved me learning the ins and outs of Image-Line’s FL Studio, making a lot of electronic demos, and enrolling in College of the Canyon’s music program. Through one of my classes, I ended up meeting my now singer and co-writer, Aaron Howles. Together, we began to transition my solo electronic project into a proper band, coming out with our debut EP, From Me To You, on October 21. 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been anything but smooth. Perfectionism is a plague I face and embrace with every new project. Being an independent artist comes with a lot of freedoms, but also a ton of setbacks that you need to figure out. A lot of other independent bands tend to go the route of saving up money to hire a producer to help make their compositions bigger than life, but for us, this wasn’t the right choice for multiple reasons. For one, I’m a bit of a control freak with my work and want as much control as possible, and can’t imagine hiring someone to make production decisions on my behalf. The other reason stems from the roots of the band as an electronic solo project; there’s a sense of pride in doing all of the production work myself that I just can’t get over.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
On top of doing all of the audio production for the band, I am also very much involved in all of our video projects. Over the years, I have been learning more and more skills in the world of video (such as color grading, editing, and VFX) to help bring our ideas to life. This has led me to help other artists with both their audio and visuals.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories has got to be whenever I would get together with my cousins to write either original plays or music. I would take any excuse I could to get the rest of my family involved with my creative side. None of the songs or plays were particularly good, but I think a big reason I continued to pursue anything creative is because I got such an insane amount of joy in the process of creating things with my family growing up.
