Life & Work with Elise Shuben of West Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Shuben.

Hi Elise, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Starting in 1977 I worked in retail sales at my parents lighting store in Woodland Hills. I did sales, decorating and buying for 26 years. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed helping people with their lighting needs for their homes. I took an eight year hiatus after the store was sold in 2003 to have my second child and got to be a stay-at-home mom which was such a blessing. My husband Richard who is an attorney and a mortgage broker suggested that I get my real estate license. I got my license 13 years ago and love everyday of being a realtor. It is a great fit for me. I enjoy working with people and helping them with their real estate needs, whether it’s selling or buying a home. I especially love helping first time home buyers as I know what a life changing event it is. My husband does the loans and together we give full service to our clients. I keep up with the constant changes in the real estate industry and am always learning so that I can give excellent service to my clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Real estate is truly a roller coaster industry. Luckily I am an optimist by nature so that I can tolerate the volatility of it. Sometimes a deal falls apart which is very frustrating but another one is almost always just around the corner. To be successful in this industry you have to be a go getter and self motivated. I believe I have these attributes and that is why I am able to hang on through all the ups and downs of real estate.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I can see something positive in every house, no matter what it currently looks like. I can visualize what it can be. I have updated and remodeled a few homes that I have sold including my own home so I have an idea of what it takes to renovate a house. I offer to improve on a home that my client is trying to sell so that we can both benefit by it selling for a higher price, when that is possible to do. I have a good eye for doing minor enhancements to a home to give it more appeal. I also will use a great a great stager when I can. I have an arsenal of talented people that I can hire to help with landscaping, flooring, painting and other home improvements when needed. A few years ago I became a solar consultant because I truly believe that solar is the way of the future and it saves people money and helps the environment.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I get along with most personalities and I have a positive attitude. That goes a long way in this industry. Buying and selling a home is a very emotional thing for most people and I try to keep a level head and do my best to help my clients through it all. I am also always working on improving myself with education and learning so I can be the best at what I do.
