We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Christie Smirl and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christie, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
As a lifelong student, I am always learning. The day I am closed to new education is the day a part of me constricts and atrophies. Every situation and person I encounter is an opportunity to learn and understand.
Currently, I am navigating the traditional system of Vigyan Bhairav Tantra dharana practices for Self-Realization with my Guru and spiritual Father, Krishnakali Das Aghori. He has guided me through intensive spiritual studies in Kali worship and Shamanic Tantra for many years now and I am excited to dive deeper.
A recent twist of fate also presenting me with the opportunity join a weekly academic study of the Srimad Bhagavatam under the gentle guidance of Jagai-Nitai Dasa. The Srimad Bhagavatam in an ancient purana, a literary incarnation of Sri Krishna.
What a blessed time this is to learn and evolve!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Gladly. Most people know me as Dr. Christie Smirl or by my spiritual name, Kalavati Devi. I hold a Doctorate degree in traditional Ayurvedic Medicine in addition to being a Nurse Practitioner, Master of Science, Reiki Master, author and Professor of Ayurveda and Yoga. As the owner and operator of the Ayurveda & Yoga Institute, I offer year-round spiritual mentorship, consultation, training and teacher certification programs internationally through Healthier Vibrations and locally at The Yale Drive Ashram. To serve the local community, I offer public lectures and free community classes that focus on soul re-connection, Vedic purification rituals and healthy vegan nutrition.
The pace and condition of this world create so many diseases of modern living. It is important to realize how stress, anxiety, anger, distraction and fear play a leading role in physical and mental disturbances. It is my belief that every person is capable of establishing a healthier alignment between mind, body and soul through the multidimensional healing modalities of Ayurveda and the Self-Realization sciences of Yoga. The ancient sages preserved this knowledge, and it is accessible here and now.
To make this technology more understandable, I previously published CHAKRA ALLIGNMENT, a transformational guide and journal to reclaim control over your chakras and life. For the children, I wrote CRINGY CAT and BRIAN’S UNFORTUNATE BRAINSTORM. These kid books are fun and colorful with catchy rhymes to make story time a learning experience about Ayurvedic nutrition and emotional self-regulation. This year, 2025, I went one step farther and published a 200-page book titled AYURVEDA & YOGA WISDOM. It is a workbook and study guide that facilitates embodiment of health and wellness on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. It is organized to help systematically locate and explain the roots of disease and how to rectify imbalances with Ayurvedic lifestyles, nutrition, yogic movements, breathwork and meditation.
Another recent highlight was the release of my 15th music collaboration. This latest album, EASY JOURNEY TO OTHER PLANETS, from THE KALI DUB PROJECT is synthesizer driven, electronic trance music, heavily influenced by occult pioneers like COIL & PSYCHIC TV as well as the ambient after-hours sound of THE ORB. This recording is filled with scattered and stacked amen breaks and fractalated beats that transport one beyond the dance floor. Check it out on any streaming platform!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
At age 4, I had an out of body experience, OBE. From that moment forward, I understood that I was more than just a physical body and that my consciousness could travel and survive outside my corporeal shell. After many subsequent childhood mystical interactions and astral projections, my awareness and vision naturally extended into the spirit world. These were not hallucinations, dreams or childhood fantasies, rather reliable and reproducible interactions beyond the veil. It was often confusing and fear provoking since spirits commonly do not communication coherently. Instead, they may only project emotions, images and fragmented information.
At age 4, I also decided that I would be a healer, whether it be doctor, nurse or veterinarian. I had a particular affinity towards end-of-life care to bridge the two realms. I and wanted to get early practical experience, so at age 15 I applied to take care of a woman named Florence. She was blind and had terminal cancer. On the weekends, I would ride my bicycle to her house and sit with her. She was overwhelmed with fear of death and worried that there was nothing after this life. I carefully tried to explain that there were many realms beyond this and that I could see them and go there. We would talk about places she wanted to see after she left her body, like the pyramids of Egypt, the rainforest, Paris, the rings of Saturn and heavenly worlds. We talked about releasing the tribulations of this life-time and getting a whole new opportunity with a new body make and model. Her mind became calm, unafraid and she passed away in peace later that year.
By age 18 I became a certified nurse aide, CNA, and got my first hospital job at St. Bernardine’s Medical Center. I landed a position in the Intensive Care Unit where the balance between life and death was like walking a tight rope. One of my jobs was to wash the corpses, prepare them for family viewing, then toe tag, bag and deliver them to the hospital morgue. Each shift, I had one foot with the living and the other foot walking with the dead. It was not stressful, rather it felt very natural and part of normal life that not many others see in this modernized world.
Eventually I became a Nurse Practitioner, NP. My graduate thesis statement was on assisting patient’s and family cope with dying and death. As a NP I began working in the Emergency Department where the fine line between life and death got even thinner, but much more stressful. At the peak of my career, I felt sick, emotionally drained and spiritually bankrupt. Soon after, I began to study the sister sciences of yoga and Ayurveda. Everything came full circle. The cycles of birth and death, karma and suffering made more sense.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
There are very few people who are strangers to pain. As a youth, I struggled to overcome family pain, separation, addiction, sexual and satanic abuse. It was a vast world that I kept secret, hidden and locked away. Slowly, the pain began to make me sick.
At age 34 I started to formally study yoga. Not just twisty yoga poses that I did in PE class or at home on VHS, but the traditional healing sciences. I discovered where my emotional pains were stored in my muscles, fascia, nervous system, organs, mind and subtle body. My teachers handed me a whole yoga tool-chest of healing breath techniques, body movements, meditation and subtle body therapeutics. Soon, I dove deep into studying Ayurvedic medicine and learned another set of tools, herbs, tinctures, teas, healing mantras, prayers, detoxifications methods, life-style rejuvenation and nutrition to heal myself. The better I felt, the more I wanted to learn and the more I shared with my hospital patients and the community.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Self – Realization is the ultimate goal of life. This is my top commitment, no matter how long it takes. The human body, mind, subtle body sheaths, sense organs and soul are NOT always properly interfaced. This leads to suffering, pain, greed, hate, lust, confusion, sin and going astray from the soul’s mission and purpose. The soul is always pure, but complications, karma and contaminations occur in this material world. Yoga and Ayurveda provide body, mind and spirit channel alignment and rejuvenation like a computer defrag, tune up and virus check.
We are all born with hurdles to overcome and spiritual goals to attain, but the vast population are not united in body, mind and soul. In Yoga we train toward a state of SAMADHI, union with our divine inner dwelling soul. We practice and balance the PURUSHARTAS, 4 aims of life, to stay on target. We self-analyze and strive to follow the YAMAS and NIYAMAS, yogic observances and abstentions for spiritual developmental success. In the 8 limbed yogic system, we also practice physical asanas, breathwork, sense organ withdrawal and purification, concentration and meditation to stay aligned with our soul in a state of Self-Realization.
As we move from body to body, lifetime after lifetime, the mind follows the Soul. Impurities and disturbances of the mind now, will persist later, so Self-Realization requires the clearance of mind vitiations so the soul can reflect through with clarity now rather than later.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am doing my life’s work with dedication to fulfilling my soul’s mission, to be of divine service, to reach my highest human spiritual potential, to heal completely and help heal others. If I had done everything that other’s told me to do, I would be lost in the rat race, stuck where I was not intended to be, miserable or dead in a ditch.
There is no one size fits all in this life. We each have very unique work to do in physical form. We must not compare ourselves to each other or try to ‘keep up with the Jone’s’. What is good for me, may be harmful to others. Your life may not make sense to others. That’s ok. We must find our own way and cross the ocean of trials back to Godhead.
