Chilam X of West LA on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Chilam X. Check out our conversation below.

Chilam, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
That question makes me pause and truly reflect on my journey. Honestly, most of the time, I feel like I’m wandering more than walking a clear, straight path. I see that as part of the process—being open to change, to what comes next, and trusting that the journey itself is what I’m meant to be on.

Earlier, I thought of my path as having specific milestones I could mark off as I went. Now I see it differently. I’ve come to understand that what really matters is walking in my purpose—doing what I came here to do. For me, that’s about healing, sharing mystical healing with others, and staying true to my inner voice.

My purpose is a promise to myself—to live authentically, to step into my own power, and to move through those stages of transformation that help me see more clearly, feel more deeply, and honor the sacred within me and all around me.

So, whether I’m walking a path or wandering through the dimensions, I know I’m exactly where I need to be—trusting that each step, each pause, is part of the sacred unfolding.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Chilam X — or, most of my clients and customers just call me Chilam. I am the artist, visionary, creator, founder, and spiritualist behind the mystical brand Sacred Syzygy Cosmic Medicine LLC.

I craft mystical potions, talismans, and amulets designed to protect and empower you on both the physical and spiritual planes. Sacred Syzygy Cosmic Medicine is an online mystical shop offering everything from high-quality soy and beeswax candles infused with mica for your prayers or workings, to cleansed and spiritually activated crystals, to animistic perfumes composed of various high-grade and intoxicating essential oils, and an array of talismanic jewelry—necklaces, rings, earrings, brooches, bracelets, and more.

Every piece I create is activated through my path as an ecstatic medium, where I invoke, summon, and call forth spirits to bring these elements to life. This mystical shop is operated solely by me, though I tailor my creations to my community and inner circle. That’s why you’ll see offerings inspired by diverse paths—from Kemetic and ancient Egyptian traditions to Santa Muerte, energy medicine, and decolonial practices.

What sets this business apart from other metaphysical shops is that it curates items for nearly every spiritual path. The wares and talismans are made by me—an ecstatic medium who allows different spirits to come through and activate the items. Besides handcrafted talismans, potions, and spiritual tools, I also offer spiritual services for those who feel called to work with me.

As a vessel practicing sacred mediumship, I work with spirits that seek to guide you—whether that’s bringing through spiritual messages, divine insights about the past, present, or future, or providing spiritual counseling on how to empower yourself and navigate worldly issues through a spiritual lens. My approach is inclusive of many paths: I have devout Christian and Catholic clients, as well as those who are agnostic, magickal, or otherwise spiritually inclined.

A core part of my mission is creating a safe, inclusive space—especially for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities—where individuals can find insight, healing, and tools for their spiritual journeys. This space is dedicated to those seeking to decolonize their spirituality, reclaim ancestral wisdom, and explore their divine sovereignty without fear of judgment or erasure. It’s a sanctuary for authentic expression, empowerment, and collective healing.

My personal spiritual path centers around decolonization on a deeply personal level, practicing sacred mediumship through chants and prayers taught by my ancestors.

Currently, I’m working on a few potions designed to call your power back to you. Many of my clients have faced deeply traumatic experiences and are in intense stages of healing. My “Call My Power Back to Me” potion is meant to be used ritually—anoint yourself with mindfulness and intention daily, or on candles and objects that can assist in deep healing and reclaiming personal power. I craft and activate it in a way that energetically supports you in taking daily steps toward reclaiming your sovereignty and self-empowerment—vital steps in calling your power back.

I’m also creating unique magician’s hand rings and brooches that transform into pendants. These are encrusted with mystical symbolism and activated crystals. The magician’s hand brooch speaks loudly to the wearer’s mystical path, serving as a powerful symbol of spiritual alignment and protection.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The moment I experienced an undeniable supernatural event that shook me to my core — a moment I couldn’t explain away with logic or reason. It defied everything I desperately wanted to believe: that the world was governed solely by science, evidence, and rationality. This encounter was so mystical, so profound, that I must keep it sacred and private.

That moment, so pivotal in my life, is a secret shared only with a select few — with the witnesses who were there that day and truly experienced it. It was an event witnessed by only three people, including myself. I’ve spent countless nights trying to understand it through research and logic, but ultimately, it led me down a different path — the path of ecstatic mediumship and embracing the unseen. I’ve allowed myself to accept what lies beyond the physical, to honor the mysteries that call to me.

Eight years in academia only challenged my worldview further — two bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees — yet here I am, walking a path I never anticipated. This mystical journey called me, and I’ve surrendered to it with unwavering conviction.

This supernatural experience, which I keep close to my heart, is not for public consumption. I share it only with those I trust deeply, because I am more concerned about what it might summon than how it might be perceived. It’s a sacred, personal truth — a mystery I hold close, knowing its power lies in the silence and reverence I gift it.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me what success never could: true self-compassion. It has opened my heart to be more empathic and kind to others because it has first shown me how to be gentle with myself. Suffering exposes wounds and places I thought I had healed — or parts of myself that haven’t yet been challenged. It forces me to confront those areas, to really see what still needs healing.

More than that, suffering has redefined my perspective on what truly matters. Success, in many ways, can reinforce our current beliefs about what’s important, but suffering pushes us to look deeper — to see what lies beneath the surface. I believe pain can be a catalyst for greatness. It teaches us to find inner strength, to remember who we truly are. Because it’s not the circumstances that define us — it’s our actions, our resilience, and the perspective we choose to adopt.

Suffering is a sacred space for reclaiming our power and honoring ourselves. It’s a profound reminder that overcoming challenges is a beautiful act of self-love. It calls us back to our humanity, urging us to be gentle with ourselves through every stage of the process.

In the journey out of suffering, there are stages — moments of deep pain, realizations that come before, during, and after. These revelations transform us, shaping our growth. Success, on the other hand, can sometimes reinforce the same patterns, the same limited approach we’ve been taking. But suffering, if embraced, becomes a sacred catalyst — a powerful teacher guiding us toward true resilience and self-discovery.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The extra nails, the shine, the magic—that’s all me. No apologies. The version you see out there? That’s pretty much the real deal — elusive, mysterious, a little wild, and definitely extra. I don’t show my face much because I like to keep some of that mystery alive. I’m a hermit in real life, and honestly, I’m the same online — same vibe, different audience.

People need to understand: magic isn’t always about barefoot wandering through forests or whispering to trees. Sometimes, it’s about owning your boldness, your glow, your fire — quietly, but fiercely. You can be sacred and still be that person who’s loud in their own way, who radiates confidence without shouting. More of us need to see that balance, that paradox — the quiet loud, the humble fierce.

The me you see on IG? That’s the real me — mysterious, a little elusive, deeply sacred, and unapologetically extra. Because real magic isn’t always loud in the way you think. It’s about owning all parts of yourself — sacred and wild, quiet and loud, divine and beautifully extra — with humility and grace.

And here’s the truth: you don’t have to shout to own your shine. Sometimes, the deepest power is in knowing when to be quiet and still, and when to turn up and be seen. That paradox — being quietly loud — that’s where the real magic lives. It’s humble, fierce, and perfectly imperfect. And honestly? That’s the kind of magic I want more of us to embrace.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I believe most people will misunderstand my legacy as being solely about what meets the eye. What my business truly offers goes beyond appearances—it’s about feeling and sensing on a deeper level.

Many will look at the jewelry, sprays, and artistry and see only crystals, beauty, and aroma. They’ll see the surface, but they won’t perceive what is meant to be felt. Wearing or using my pieces will undoubtedly attract attention—people will notice, stare, and be drawn in. But very few will take the time to feel beyond the aesthetics, beyond the surface.

My hope is that this business serves as a reminder: we must trust our hidden eyes, not the conditioned ones that are shaped to see only what is visible on the surface. True perception goes beyond what is seen—it’s about sensing the essence, the energy, and the unseen.
