We recently had the chance to connect with Monica Lakey and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Monica , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
It was when I moved to the US, and to be able to see how much my business has been growing during these years. The feeling of accomplishment and pride is the greatest reward.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Monica Lakey, I am originally from the Amazon region in Brazil, and I am the owner of Monica Lakey Beauty Spa, where we offer body sculpting sessions, facial treatments, waxing, and eyebrow design. Additionally, I am the founder of Monica Lakey Academy, an institution that supports our students in entering new fields or starting their own businesses in body sculpting. I also created my own skincare, body, and wellness cosmetics brand called Dermazonia, which uses ingredients from the Amazon rainforest.
When I was 18, I left home in search of new possibilities in the capital of Amazonas, where I graduated in Aesthetics and Cosmetology. I began my career working in clinics, gaining valuable experience and insights. Later, I moved to São Paulo, the largest state in Brazil, to specialize in Surgical Procedures through postgraduate studies, which provided me with even more practical experience.
In 2018, I came to the United States through the Au Pair program with the goal of learning English, experiencing American culture, and living a new adventure. Little did I know that this path would hold something very special for me: an opportunity to build a new story of purpose, challenges, faith, and success. This journey teaches me every day to inspire others to never give up on their dreams and to believe that everything is possible with determination.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I approach life in a light and joyful way, always with a smile on my face, especially at my SPA, where I welcome my clients and my team with kindness and dedication, doing what I love. I believe we should be grateful for everything we have and share that feeling, as it can inspire and transform the lives of those around us. I understand that the path isn’t always easy, but it’s essential to have strength and courage to move forward.
I increasingly turn to Jesus, where I stay strong and which helps me face obstacles with courage and serenity. Through prayer and the love I feel for Him, I have learned to trust that, even in the toughest moments, there is a greater purpose and that everything works together for my growth and maturity.
This spiritual connection gives me a more positive outlook and a deeper understanding of the true meaning of life, helping me to become a more compassionate, resilient, and grateful person for every experience—whether good or challenging.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I believe that we all go through difficult moments, and I have experienced that myself. The process can be painful, and sometimes it feels like we’ve tried everything, that we’re exhausted, and ready to give up. It’s completely understandable to feel that way, but in those moments, it’s essential to maintain inner strength. When all of this happened to me, I asked God to renew my strength. I realized that if I was going through it, it was part of my purpose and my story — and I needed to keep going because my journey could help others in the future.
It was at that moment that my strength and mindset were renewed, and I chose to move forward. Today, I live everything I always dreamed of, and what once seemed written for me has become my reality. Because life doesn’t end when we reach a goal; it continues, and with each achievement come new opportunities and challenges.
Every step brings us closer to our true purpose, and there is always something greater waiting for us at the end of the journey.
Never give up. Believe that the best is yet to come, and that every obstacle is simply an opportunity to grow and get even closer to your dreams.

God and my family are my greatest blessings. I deeply believe that being surrounded by people who love, support, and encourage us makes all the difference, making everything lighter, more meaningful, and filled with hope. These bonds of affection, care, and solidarity are essential for me to maintain emotional balance, happiness, and a sense of fulfillment. This connection makes my life richer, and motivates me to cherish and be grateful for each moment.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I believe that we should not undertake something solely expecting praise from others. Regardless of your work or the task at hand, it’s essential to give your best, continuously seek to do more, and strive for constant improvement. This approach not only strengthens your professional journey but also enriches your personal life, as it promotes ongoing learning. In this sense, recognition and praise will be a natural consequence of your commitment and dedication.
Many times, we might not be doing exactly what we want at that moment, but perhaps this situation is a test or an opportunity to prepare you for something greater in the future. What you accomplish today could be a crucial step in building a more solid and promising path, leading you to achieve more ambitious goals in the next chapter of your journey.
