Today we’d like to introduce you to Aneela Zaman.
Aneela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I reached my 4o’s, I started to notice that my skin was dehydrated and lacked radiance. All of my friends were also unhappy with their skin. I wanted to create a skincare line dedicated to restoring that timeless radiance we all knew was within us. The inspiration behind Zaman Skincare is my father, Sultan Khattak, who worked for Abbott’s, a leading laboratory in Pakistan, where he discovered the multitude of internal and external benefits of Black Cumin Seed, our “secret” ingredient. It is my sincere passion to share my father’s discovery with men and women across the globe, helping them to embrace age with confidence in their skin care regimen. I formulated two serums, Rise & Shine and Sleeping Beauty, to enable women to truly attain simple, elegant, and radiant beauty that lasts!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting any business requires hard work and there will always be challenges, but if you stay passionate and focused you will see results. Building a brand from scratch is a lot of work! Being an indie brand, you are financially limited in what you can do. For example, most factories do not sell silk screen bottles in low quantities. So, we chose to go the labeling route. Little did I know, the labels that were created were the wrong size and I had to personally (with the help of a few incredible friends) remove the labels from 2,000 bottles over Thanksgiving. This label issue posed numerous challenges for the brand. Production was set back by an additional four weeks, new labels needed to be designed and reapplied (I even missed a trade show to complete the design of the bottles!), and the brand lost $1600 from its already limited budget. So, while the journey has not been all highs, Zaman Skincare is truly my passion and I am dedicated to making the brand a success.

No business is successful without a little help, though. I sought out mentoring and was fortunate enough to find the Small Business Development Center. I attended a one-hour orientation, which led me to work with talented professionals like Michael Dedonato who helped me with my business plan, along with Nathan Jemison, who assisted me in securing a small loan with a bank.
What were you like growing up?
I was raised in a big family! Two sisters and four brothers growing up under one roof, so you could say I was a bit of a tomboy. My mother and father were immigrants from Pakistan who worked tirelessly to provide me and my siblings with a good life. They instilled in us morals and values about hard work and pursuing your dreams, regardless of any obstacles life might throw at us. From an early age, I was extremely active and ambitious. Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to create products. It has been a huge dream of mine to help others and make people feel good about themselves. It was this natural inclination to always help others, to realize their true beauty, that sparked my career as a make up artist over 20 years ago. I never gave up on my dream to create innovative products that would ultimately enhance one’s beauty. I am so excited to share with the world Zaman Skincare, providing women and men timeless radiance one face at a time!
