Good morning Mellow , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’d say what I’m most proud of is the community I’ve been building with my music and my monthly showcase, LOOPERS. That’s what people see. But what they don’t always see is what it represents for me—I’m really building a musical legacy, something that lasts beyond just the physical. That part’s more personal, but it’s what drives me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mellow Thing — I’m a producer, beatmaker, and drummer from East Los Angeles. I’ve been making music for over 20 years, blending my experience as a musician, audio engineer, and mixer into what I like to call ‘consistently inconsistent’ sounds. I’ve worked with both local and global artists, and along the way I’ve run a small record label and now own a recording studio just outside of East LA. At the core of everything I do is community and creativity — I want to build spaces where artists can experiment, connect, and push music forward.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents. They saw something in me that they didn’t see in my 9 other older brothers and sister. My mom had a trust in me that she’s didn’t with the others. She would only let me hold and count her money and jewelry, things like that. My dad knew what I wanted to do with myself so he always supported me, never criticized me. I would come home to him leaving me a new pair of drumsticks on my bed from time to time.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t ever doubt yourself.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
I hold onto the truth that anything is possible — that reality is clay, waiting to be shaped into what you envision, so long as you mold it with integrity and without harm to others.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m NOT following what I was told to do — I’m following what I LOVE to do. And in that process, I’ve discovered it’s exactly what I was meant to do.
