An Inspired Chat with Juan Leyva

We recently had the chance to connect with Juan Leyva and have shared our conversation below.

Juan, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the biggest misconceptions about my business is that it’s just about showing up, making drinks, and heading out. In reality, there’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into every event—long before the first guest arrives and well after the last cocktail is served. From the initial inquiry, we’re already establishing a relationship with the client, designing menus, sourcing supplies, coordinating with vendors and venues, creating detailed run-of-show plans, and even mapping out shopping lists and routes. My team and I carefully review recipes, signature cocktails, and all the event-day logistics to ensure nothing is overlooked. On the day of, we arrive early to set up the bar, adapt to any last-minute changes, and get everything dialed in. And once the event winds down, we’re still working—breaking down stations, cleaning thoroughly, and taking inventory to wrap things up professionally. That start-to-finish dedication is what truly sets us apart and reflects the pride we take in every single event.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Juan Leyva, and I’m the owner and founder of Black Tux Bartending, a mobile bartending service based in Southern California. My passion for bartending started years ago, I always had the curiosity in the way drinks were made. Eventually, that curiosity turned into a full-on obsession with mixology. I started experimenting at home, slowly building my liquor collection one grocery trip at a time, and in 2021, Black Tux Bartending was officially born.

What started as a weekend hobby bartending small parties for friends and family has grown into a full-service team that serves everything from private celebrations to large events. What makes us unique is how much heart and detail we put into every event. We don’t just show up and pour drinks—we help clients build menus, source ingredients, prep cocktails, and make sure every guest has an elevated experience.

I’m proud to say I’ve built my business completely through word of mouth. That support means everything to us, and we continue to grow because of it. Right now, we’re focused on expanding our offerings, working with new venues, and leveling up every aspect of our service to match the love and effort our clients put into their events.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve learned the most about work from being in the field, working with various event companies over the years has taught me everything I know about running my own business. From front-of-house to back-of-house and everything in between, each role gave me insight into how events operate at every level. I’ve always been the type to ask questions, observe, and absorb as much as I can. I do it because I genuinely enjoy it. The more I know, the better I can serve my clients and improve my business. Every gig, every shift, every person I’ve had the pleasure to work with and every new friend I’ve made in the way has taught me something new that I now apply to Black Tux Bartending.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to trust the process because things happen for a reason, and every step, even the setbacks, are leading you somewhere important. Remind myself that I am exactly where I need to be. If anything, start earlier, take more chances, and don’t be afraid to let things unfold. Just keep pushing forward, even when it gets tough. The path won’t always make sense in the moment, but it all comes together in time.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the bartending and events industry is the idea that it’s all fun and easy. That we just pour drinks, smile, and collect tips. People don’t always see the physical, mental, and emotional effort that goes into this work. From long hours on your feet, navigating tricky clients or unexpected changes, to managing logistics, inventory, and staffing, it’s a full operation. Another lie is that presentation is more important than service. The truth is, a nice elegant setup means nothing if the service and hospitality aren’t there. The best bartenders aren’t just mixing drinks, they’re reading the room, connecting with guests, and keeping everything flowing behind the scenes.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Definitely. I believe in always giving my best, with or without recognition. At the end of the day, it’s about having pride in your work and knowing you showed up fully—no matter who’s watching. In this industry, a lot of what we do happens behind the scenes: the early prep, the long hours, the breakdown after everyone’s gone. But I’ve learned that true fulfillment comes from knowing you gave it your all, not from the applause. The results speak for themselves, and Black Tux Bartending is a reflection of that effort. It’s grown into what it is today because of the hard work we all put in—it’s always been a team effort.
