Marta Miller of Downtown on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Marta Miller shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Marta, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I have three kids, so mornings are a kind of organized chaos. We wake up at 6:00 am and spend about 15 minutes snuggling—a time I truly treasure. I do my best to avoid looking at my phone so I can be fully present with them.

By 7:15 am, we need to be out the door to drop my middle child at school, so that hour between 6:15 and 7:15 is a whirlwind of getting everyone dressed, fed, and ready. I try to be proactive—like making pancake batter the night before—but my kids are little foodies and refuse to settle for just a granola bar. Inevitably, something goes sideways. This morning, for instance, my two-year-old insisted on wearing a dress with pockets—and only a dress with pockets—which caused our delay.

Once we’re finally in the car, we always say our morning prayers. That ritual helps center us all before we start the day. First stop is dropping Brayden, my middle one, at school, then baby Millie at preschool. After that, it’s just me and Clay, my oldest, who doesn’t need to be at school until 8:50. , we have a special routine: we head to the gym together. We found a place that allows 11-year-olds, so we work out side by side, then reward ourselves with a little treat before school.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks bonds between people is usually a lack of trust and communication. When expectations aren’t met, or when people feel unseen or unheard, cracks start to form. In business, I’ve seen that misalignment, ego, and blame can quickly damage relationships. In life, it’s often the same—when we stop really listening to each other, or when kindness gets lost in the rush of everything else.

But bonds can always be restored. They’re rebuilt through honesty, humility, and a willingness to show up for one another. Sometimes it takes saying, “I was wrong,” or simply choosing to forgive and move forward. For me, respect and consistency are at the heart of every strong relationship—whether with my team, my clients, or my family. When people feel valued and understood, connection returns. I also have learned that being “right” is not worth it. People have their side of the story and are often uninterested in being anything but heard. It took me years to learn this, but it has really helped me. I do not need to prove a point. Being right truly does not matter.

At the end of the day, bonds are maintained and repaired by choosing grace over judgment and remembering that we’re all human, doing our best.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her that she is both fearless and grounded. At 43, I am so proud of the wisdom I carried even then—that the most important decision I would ever make was choosing the man I would marry. I absolutely adore my husband. We’ve been together since I was 26, and from our love we’ve created three incredible children. Truthfully, I could spend an entire weekend with just our little tribe and feel completely fulfilled. In my heart, your life partner is everything. He has stood beside me through business, through parenting, and through every season of life.

I’m proud that my younger self knew to search for the right partner, and I’m equally proud of her resilience in building a business and never giving up. Since 2007, when I launched my first venture, I’ve faced countless hardships. But through it all, I have never backed down. I’ve always chosen to stand tall, face challenges head on, and keep moving forward. There were so many times that I dreamed of clocking in and clocking out and not having the weight of owning a company on my shoulders but that is not my destiny and I have always navigated hardship head on. The last thing I would tell younger self and current self is to relax and slow down. I recently lost my dad and I am sad to not have another day with him. As important as business is the people are the most important and we should always slow down and enjoy them cause you do not always have them around. I miss my dad, but know he would be proud of me for navigating my businesses during my recent grief.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friends would say that I bring lightness and depth. So much of my life is rooted in responsibility—owning a business comes with weight, deadlines, and decisions that don’t always leave room for play. But at my core, I’m light, silly, and full of laughter. When I finally have the chance to let go, what I want most is to be easy, joyful, and present.

Right now, that joy comes through playing mahjong with my friends. It has become one of my favorite rituals—a mix of laughter, competition, and challenge that keeps my mind sharp while filling my heart with deep conversation. Around that table, I feel most myself: playful, connected, and completely in the moment with my dearest of friends.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Being a manufacturer is probably the most thankless job I’ve ever had. Praise is rare, and criticism comes quickly if perfection isn’t met. Being an owner isn’t much different—it can feel just as thankless at times. So I don’t have a career that comes with constant pats on the back.

But the truth is, I don’t need them. I’ve always thrived on intrinsic motivation. I genuinely like what I do. Even when it’s hard, I love the challenge of finding solutions. Watching the company grow and evolve gives me pride, and even if clients don’t always say “thank you,” knowing that some have trusted us for more than a decade speaks volumes. That loyalty makes me proud.

And there’s another kind of gratitude in this work—the clothes themselves. When a garment finally comes together after countless fittings and sourcing rounds, it feels like its own reward. That moment is pure satisfaction.

These days, my biggest motivation is my team. They are talented, dedicated, and the heart of everything we do. Keeping this incredible group intact and thriving is what drives me forward every single day.
