Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Taylor.
Hi Heidi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been in the mental health field for over 30 years. I started at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital in LA working with children and adolescents in the psychiatry department. I worked there for 6 years. I moved to Ventura County and worked and interned at several agencies, including Interface Children and Family Services, Clinicas Del Camino Real, Inc., and Malibu Horizon. I also worked at The Discovery House in the San Fernando Valley and Managed Med in LA. I have been in private practice for 8 years as a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in trauma, depression, grief, LGBTQIA, and family law issues. I see all ages, individuals, couples and families. I ran the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Ventura County support group for 10 years. I do animal assisted therapy and Emotional Support Animal evaluations. I have been a Ventura County court approved supervised visitation monitor for over 25 years. I recently became certified in reiki and incorporate it into my trauma practice. I am the author of a book on recovery from loss and grief. Lastly, I craft as a hobby and side hustle, making beautiful glassware decoupaged with real dried flowers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been anything but a smooth road. I suffered with numerous illnesses, broken bones, surgeries, nearly losing my life to Crohn’s Disease. At the very start of my doctoral program, I lost the love of my life to an accidental overdose when he was just 27 years old, which altered the entire trajectory of my dissertation, specialization, and life as a whole. I had a few very unsympathetic professors and personnel at my graduate school who were not supportive of my health challenges or my severe loss which made it extremely difficult to graduate, but I did it without even taking a leave of absence. Recovering from the loss of my fiancé was the basis of my book, “Tales of Awakening; Coming to Life Again After a Period of Emotional Deadness.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in supervising visits between non-custodial parents and their children when it is court ordered for physical abuse, sexual abuse, substance abuse, domestic violence, flight risk, estrangement, or mental illness. I also of course provide psychotherapy in my private practice as I described in my introduction. What sets me apart is that I myself have had many struggles, so I have the capacity to sit with dark feelings and understand more than most other people. I am deeply caring, kind, empathetic, and compassionate. I stay calm during stressful times. I am reliable, dependable, and punctual. I’m very proud to run 2 small businesses completely by myself with absolutely zero assistance. I do it all myself: scheduling, billing, intakes, court appearances, you name it. I am here to help you through your most trying times.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love networking with others. People can help me by sharing my information, connecting with me on social media, inviting me to speak at or attend events, sharing or buying my artwork, and buying or recommending my book.
