Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Viera and Tommy Wooh.
After working together in a shared studio space for a year, founders Evan and Tommy Wooh decided to form ROYGBIV, a collective creating narrative-driven project. As directors, Evan and Tommy have their share of experience, expertise and talent.
Evan is a multi-award winning director whose work has screened in over a hundred festivals worldwide, as well as being invited to speak at Pixar Animation Studios and Ars Electronica Festival. Tommy has over 15 years of commercial experience working for clients such as Nike, Google, and Facebook.
Their collective experience and creativity are united under ROYGBIV.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We keep afloat by producing and directing commercials. But our primary goal and purpose is to develop long-form narrative work. Getting there is very difficult, and there are always setbacks. We’ve experienced too many to list and they’ve become a familiar part of our journey.
Animation is expensive, time-consuming, and very competitive. And to make things more difficult, we are only interested in developing work outside the mainstream culture of animation.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ROYGBIV – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We produce and direct for commercials, but aspire to do much more. We are represented by Passion Pictures and most recently directed the World Championships Promo for League of Legends.
I’m proud that we reinvest just about everything we can into our IP. We take a lot of risks and are uncompromising with our vision. We’d find success a lot easier if we played the market and developed content that was specific to industry needs, but we have no interest in doing that. Our ambitions are much broader. The current ecosystem is a sliver of what the full spectrum medium can be. Our interests are out there, on the fringes.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We have several long format projects in the works, all of them are in early stages. In the next few years, we hope one of these projects takes our focus.
We’ve also enjoyed working with the games industry. Partnering with their properties could allow us to produce the kind of narrative work we’re interested in, while also having access to a preexisting fanbase. It could be the games industry that catalyzes a change. If some game titles are successful as animated series, then we might see a widening in how animation is appreciated and consumed. That’s my hope.
