Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Jimenez.
Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started drawing caricatures professionally in 2013 when I was recruited by a small agency that’s no longer in business. During that time, I had the chance to draw thousands of people from all kinds of backgrounds. It was a good learning experience that helped me improve my skills and understand how to work in different event settings.
Eventually, I decided to start working independently so I could connect directly with clients and event coordinators. Since then, I’ve continued offering caricature services for a range of events— parties, weddings, corporate gatherings, and festivals. I aim to provide a light, fun form of entertainment that guests of all ages can enjoy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never a smooth journey—like many business owners, I’ve faced my share of challenges. Obstacles have come and will continue to come, but I’ll mention one that happened while I was working at the agency. My work was sometimes criticized or misunderstood, but that’s part of the process. You quickly learn not to take things personally, and it’s important to acknowledge and take in feedback. In this kind of work, developing tough skin is just as important as building your skills. Personally, I believe there’s no room for ego in this field. It’s a value I hold strongly and something I think all business owners can benefit from reflecting on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in drawing live caricatures at events, as well as creating commissioned pieces. I wouldn’t say I’m proud in the traditional sense, but I truly enjoy being part of people’s special moments. Over the years, many clients have invited me back—sometimes yearly, sometimes every few years—to draw them or their loved ones again. There’s something meaningful about helping create a memory that lasts, whether it’s a keepsake from a celebration or a playful drawing that ends up framed in someone’s home.
As for what sets me apart—I don’t just speak for myself, but for all caricature artists. Each of us has a unique, recognizable style. When I see a caricature, I can often tell who drew it because every artist develops their own visual “signature.” That’s what makes caricature art so special. Getting a drawing from an artist whose work you love is something worth holding onto. I’ve experienced that as a fan, too. I’ve commissioned pieces from fellow artists whose work I admire, and some of them are no longer drawing due to health or other reasons. I’m incredibly grateful I had the chance to get something from them while I could. It reminded me just how valuable not only my own work is, but the work of all caricature artists.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One childhood memory I truly appreciate—aside from spending a lot of time drawing—is when I began studying the Bible with a teacher. Those early lessons had a deep impact on me and helped shape the person I am today. I learned and continue to learn. I never take that guidance for granted, because I truly believe that without it, I could’ve grown into a very unkind person.
