Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Alvarez.
Hi Carlos, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m born and raised in Yonkers, NY and have been a lifelong fan of movies. Originally, I majored in Computer Arts and Technology because I wanted to be an animator after watching the first two Shrek movies but unfortunately, my professors quickly killed that for me as they were beyond strict. I still wanted to be a filmmaker so I changed my major to Media Studies and Film to focus on becoming a screenwriter. In 2013, I wrote my first short film script “The Elysian Field”, after a tragic loss to help cope with my grief and it went on to win awards at various film festivals and even streamed for a time on Amazon Prime.
Though “The Elysian Field” was a success, there were BTS drama with my director who refused to edit the film so I sued him in small claims court and won. With the film now out in the wild and gaining attention, I decided it was time to move to LA to pursue my career of becoming a Hollywood screenwriter in January 2018.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road but there were definitely all kinds of struggles. When it comes to the film industry, it’s true what they. It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know and unfortunately, I didn’t know anyone or how to even go about getting my foot in the door so I had to work jobs that I was unhappy with to help pay the bills while I figured out how to get into the film industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a production assistant in Hollywood and have worked on multiple TV shows, commercials and movies. When I’m not doing PA gigs, I’m working on my own film projects. I’m most proud of my current film project, an animated short film called “Chana” based on my mom and aunts childhood.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Achieving goals, both professional and personal, while also striving for a fulfilling life and a sense of peace.
