Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Finn.
Hi Tom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got into glassblowing in early 2023 after a motorcycle accident pushed me to find a new creative outlet. I had zero artistic background when I started, but I was drawn to the idea of working with my hands and making something tangible. I rented studio space, spent hours learning the basics, and quickly fell in love with the craft — especially the precision and patience it demands.
At first, I focused on making artistic marbles and perfecting dot stacking techniques, but over time, I expanded into functional glass and started building a small brand around it. That’s how Finn was born — a reflection of my style: clean, intentional, and accessible. I’m proud to say everything I make under Finn is focused on quality without the crazy price tag, and I stay rooted in the belief that anyone can build something meaningful if they just start.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Learning glassblowing from scratch without an artistic background was a huge challenge. Glass is unforgiving — you can’t fake it or rush it — and there were a lot of frustrating nights early on where nothing seemed to go right. On top of that, building a brand while still learning the craft added extra pressure. I had to figure out not just how to make quality pieces, but also how to handle marketing, packaging, customer service, and everything else that comes with running a business. There were times when self-doubt crept in, wondering if I had started too late or if I’d ever get good enough. But every mistake was part of the process, and looking back, the struggles made the wins mean even more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a glassblower and the founder of Finn, where I focus on making high-quality, functional glass with a minimalist, intentional style. I specialize in clean designs that feel timeless — from artistic marbles to functional accessories. Right now, I’m best known for my precision dot stacks and for creating well-made pieces that are accessible without sacrificing quality.
What I’m most proud of is staying true to my roots. I didn’t come into this with an art background or a big budget — just a real love for the craft and a drive to keep getting better. Every piece that leaves my studio reflects that journey.
What sets me apart is the focus on function and feel, not just looks. I want people to actually use and enjoy what I make — not just put it on a shelf. Finn is about that blend of craftsmanship and real-world use, all while keeping things approachable for everyone.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has definitely played a role — both good and bad. The motorcycle accident that initially pushed me toward glassblowing didn’t feel like luck at the time, but looking back, it was a turning point that opened up a completely new path for me. I also feel lucky to have found a great community of artists early on who were willing to share knowledge and encourage me when I was just starting out.
At the same time, building a business always comes with a lot of things you can’t control — timing, opportunities, setbacks — and you have to be ready to adapt when luck isn’t on your side. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that luck can open a door, but it’s on you to be ready to walk through it.
