Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Dubovtseva.
Jasmine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Jasmine, and I am a makeup artist based in Los Angeles, and a true lover of all things beauty, fashion and cosmetics. Today I work with private clients, on photoshoots and fashion shows.
I’ve been passionate about makeup since high school, but my professional path started in a completely different direction. I worked as a marketing manager, helping promote car dealerships through campaigns on TV, radio and digital platforms. It was an exciting job at first, but eventually I burned out. I felt uninspired and craved something more creative and expressive. That’s when I decided to make a change.
At that point, I had two ideas in mind: makeup or fitness. And believe it or not, I chose fitness! But over time I realized that my love for makeup ran deeper. So I started studying makeup seriously.
From the very first class I loved every moment of learning. After graduation I started freelancing, but then the pandemic hit, and like many others, I had to pause everything.
Two years ago my husband and I moved to Los Angeles. It was a huge shift – a new country, a new language and a completely different world from Russia where we used to live. And then I slowly started rebuilding my makeup artist career. I networked, took on small jobs, and found myself back in the industry, this time in L.A.
Now I worked with clients, participate in creatives shoots and have even been part of LA Fashion Week. I’m currently expanding my skill set to include hairstyling, since it is something clients asking often. One of my biggest dreams is to work in the film industry. I’ve been on set a few times as a background actor, and that experience made me realize – I want to be there as a makeup artist.
I truly love people, and they inspire me every day. For me makeup isn’t just a job it is a way to give confidence, beauty and joy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. I have faced different challenges at every stage.
First, I had to leave a stable career in marketing and start from scratch learning a new craft and building a whole new professional identity.
Then the pandemic hit and put everything on hold just as I was starting to grow.
Later, moving to Los Angeles brought a new wave of challenges : new language, new rules, new market. It was overwhelming at first, and it took time to start building a client base and finding place.
And on top of that when you are new and nobody knows who you are. You constantly have to prove yourself, search for opportunities, gain experience.
Sometime it feels like an endless uphill journey.
But it is these exact struggles that helped me grow. They taught me patience and courage, and reminded me that the most important thing is simply to keep going.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create makeup that brings out individuality and emotion. I love working on bold, creative looks for photoshoots and fashion shows, as well as soft glam for everyday clients. For me makeup isn’t just about cosmetics, it is a way to express yourself and boost confidence.
I am proud to have worked at LA Fashion Week, been part of creative projects, and built trusting relationship with my clients. But I am also proud of the strength it took to overcome challenges and keep moving forward with my career, even when it wasn’t easy.
What sets me apart is my genuine care for people, attention to detail and love of learning. I am always exploring new techniques, staying updated on trends and products, and evolving as an artist. I also make it a top priority to use only high-quality products and I care deeply about the health and safety of my clients, I always clean and sanitize my brushes and tools before every session.
Above all, I truly believe that every person has a unique beauty and my mission as a makeup artist is to help them see it and shine.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
One of the most important qualities that has contributed to my success is my dedication to learning and growth. I received my foundation from one of the top makeup schools in Russia, which gave me a strong base and a professional mindset from the beginning. But I never stop learning, I am always working to improve, exploring new techniques and staying on top of trends and products.
Another key trait is being attentive to people. I truly believe that listening to the client, understanding their needs and creating a comfortable environment is just as important as technical skills.
And finally it is persistence. There were moments when I could have given up, but I always found the strength to keep going.
