Meet Laurence Bee of Desert Island Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurence Bee.

Laurence, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m from the southside of Chicago born and raised. I went to school for Music Production and Audio Production at Full Sail University. Moved to LA in September 2018. I was an intern at 1500 or Nothin collective. While there I was learning not only production, but skills that made me a better engineer. At the time the school was the only thing operating (1500 Sound Academy). Being around the environment of music made me more of a student of how to create that best product. Taking tips and tricks from what I learned and implementing it in the sessions they would put me in enhanced my ear. Working with Dawkins family as an engineers helped me become aware of all the different aspects it takes to create. Learning about vocal production and songwriting by being in the room as an engineer.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s has not always been smooth road. I think anyone who gets into this field might feel the same way as I do. You have to build your way to consistency and that’s not always easy. You have your good days and bad days. The biggest hurdle is being consistent. As an engineer you can do that by staying in the studio, constantly recording in new ways, and boarding your scope of things you can do.

We’ve been impressed with Desert Island Studios , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Desert Island Studios is a recording studio I open in 2020. I specialize in recording, mixing, and mastering. I’m known for the way that I use autotune and make vocals sit as one with the track. What sets me apart from other engineers is that I like to fuse genres. Also, when you step on the booth you’re already in the vibe you need to be. I listen to the record before we start to adjust the sonics to your voice. Brand wise I’m proud that I’m someone who’s creates in a way that lets the artist be themselves when they record. It’s the little things artist do that they’re not aware of. As an engineer it’s my job to catch that. Everything that I’ve listed before is what I offer to all artist.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The shift will be in the content world and the tech that is created. AI is here and as creative we will have to learn how to utilize it to benefit us.
