Hidden Gems: Meet Roshonda Payne of Lavish Lengths

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshonda Payne.

Roshonda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t think that I would have to make a pivot in my life at 52 years old, but everything happens for a reason.
In 2023, I was flying for JSX, a semi-private airline, flying part-time as a flight attendant for the Arizona Cardinals and working as a product specialist and presenter for luxury automotive manufacturer, Genesis. Later on that year, I had some issues with my back while flying and eventually I would find out after getting an MRI and being seen by an Orthopedic Surgeon that my daily responsibilities as a flight attendant, mainly opening and closing the door was causing a lot of wear and tear on my back and it would eventually get worse. So, early last year I made the difficult decision to resign from my position and for a moment I felt stuck and began to fall into depression. Starting over was easy when I was younger, but this time I was a little nervous about finding a new career and beginning again at my age. But after taking some time to pray and focusing on the positive things I’ve accomplished in my life so far, I decided to pursue a new career that would allow me to be creative, my own boss and to help women to look and feel better about themselves; so I enrolled in cosmetology school. And within the last 6 months, I have become a licensed cosmetologist, owner of a hair studio and luxury hair extensions brand.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say that it’s been a smooth road, but everything that I went through was necessary to be successful in this new career and business. After I resigned, I lost a salary and two other streams of income, so the majority of the struggles I endured were centered around finances. I had to pay for cosmetology school and with no income, I had to use personal savings and credit cards to survive. Living in LA without a full-time job, is not like living in Kentucky.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lavish Lengths?
Lavish Lengths is a luxury hair studio located in the Magnolia Park area of Burbank. My speciality is silkening and smoothing treatments for natural & textured hair and a few luxury hair extensions services. I’m known for giving my clients’ hair a luxury spa experience at the shampoo bowl, natural silk presses and hair extensions. I’m expanding my brand and have launched a raw hair extensions line called, La Lavish.

I’m really proud of being a new stylist with an hair studio and building this brand from scratch.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me outside of my family, friends and my relationship with God, is believing in myself and doing something that would not only benefit my life but someone else’s too. It matters because I have been so blessed over the years and have overcome so many setbacks in my life that I feel that I have a responsibility to give back.
