Check Out Julia Bush’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Bush.

Hi Julia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an artist who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and I also have a Master’s degree in Education. I taught several art classes as a high school teacher for almost a decade, but left recently to have the time to create art myself and continue writing. I’m inspired by anything millennial, beautiful people, and nostalgia. My brain never stops coming up with ideas and I wish I had all the time in the world to finish them all!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was hard to give up teaching because I love being in the classroom with adorable students and making up projects and watching them learn and create. I’ll always cherish those memories and be a little emotional when I see my old students all grown up. Initially, it was difficult choosing myself, but being in my thirties brought on new perspectives about life and my goals and dreams, and I felt that it was time for a new chapter.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a contemporary fine artist and I specialize in portraits in the Warhol style (both physically and digitally) as well as other subjects and media. Being an art teacher helped me sharpen my skills with a large variety of media so I would say that I’m very well versed in lots of materials and styles of art. I created handmade portraits for my favorite podcast, Disrespectfully, which you can see by watching their podcast on YouTube or on their instagram. I’m also a published author with more books in the works for both adults and children. Check out My Patio, a children’s book, to see my illustrations.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to look HOT. I love to show off the parts of me I think are sexy and I feel happy when other people look and feel their best. I had to hide this part of me being a teacher (reasonably) but, I go back and forth between a bit of regret not letting myself be truly who I was. I didn’t partake in social media because I didn’t know how to be myself authentically without showing that side of me, so I’m kind of late to the game. I also had to delete and pretty much stop creating art that involved my main subject- the nude body, in which I used myself as a reference in realistic oil paintings. It makes sense to quiet that part of yourself when working with teenagers and it was the responsible choice so I’m proud I did that. Although now, all bets are off!
