Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Angel.
Hi Sydney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in San Francisco, but spent most of my life in NYC. I went to college at NYU and did theater and photography during my time in the city. I scored some Shakespeare shows I was in, and had been writing music and poetry privately for my entire life, but strangely never thought to pursue a career in songwriting. When the pandemic started, I was inspired to learn how to produce Ableton; with so much time on my hands, I threw myself into the music world. I felt like finally understood my purpose and what I really wanted to do with my life. By 2022, my husband Randy and I had decided to move LA, and I took the leap to release my self-produced debut EP, Manic Pixie Dream. In 2023, I was unexpectedly awarded a full scholarship to attend Stargate’s LAAMP program, where I had the incredible opportunity to be mentored by leading producers and songwriters in the music industry. Later that year, I was selected as a producer for ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Workshop. I released my latest single Betrayal in April 2024, and I am now gearing up to release my second EP, Show & Tell on May 16, 2025.
Musically, my project, sydneyunicorns, blends genre-bending pop with experimental soundscapes.
I often fuse ethereal vocal layering with heavy bass, synths, and powerful vocals that balance darkness,
light, rebellion, and vulnerability. In my lyrics, I abstract my thoughts & feelings with dynamic
imagination and courage, and authentically share my inner complexities with listeners to the best of my ability. My greatest hope is that people feel seen through my writing and transported through
my melodies and production. I am always evolving and experimenting while staying true to my voice, vision, & sound. Some of my many MANY musical influences are Lady Gaga, Grimes, Allie X, Sara Bareilles, Lorde, Kate Bush,Caroline Polachek, Buzz, Fiona Apple, and Banks.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! It has been a very twisty journey! I don’t think that I’ve ever landed on a straight and narrow path because it’s just not who I am. When I look back at my life, I always see very clearly the way different bumps and turns have connected and brought me to where I am now. Often in the moment it feels hard and uncomfortable, but there is always a reason.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I put that in the bio section!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Trust your gut. Take the leap. You may freefall, but ultimately something will catch you. Surround yourself with people who value what you have to offer and F the rest. Share your gifts, keep creating, and take up space just as you are; the world needs your art. You are enough.
