Today we’d like to introduce you to Serina Nersisian.
Hi Serina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a therapist with a deep passion for working with kids, teens, and families, especially around helping children build stronger, healthier bonds with their parents. My journey started in early education right after high school, but I quickly realized that while I loved working with children, my true calling wasn’t in teaching—it was in helping them heal, grow, and thrive emotionally. That realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology and become a therapist. Now, years later and as a mom of two daughters, I have an even deeper appreciation for the parent-child relationship. It’s become my professional mission to support the mental health of kids and teens so they can form healthy, meaningful connections with their parents and others in their lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges in working with teens is that they often have a hard time trusting and opening up to adults—naturally, their focus tends to be on connecting with peers their own age. When therapy is initiated by parents rather than the teens themselves, it can lead to resistance or disengagement. That said, over the years, I’ve developed a strong ability to connect with teens who are hesitant, skeptical, or even outright rejecting the idea of therapy. Building trust takes time, but I’ve learned how to meet them where they are and create a space where they feel seen, heard, and understood.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Therapy Today?
My practice is focused on supporting the mental and emotional well-being of children, teens, and families. I specialize in helping young people navigate challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship struggles—especially when it comes to strengthening the bond between children and their parents. What sets my work apart is my ability to connect with kids and teens who may be disengaged or resistant to therapy. I take a relational, compassionate, and culturally sensitive approach that allows me to build trust with young clients in a way that feels safe and empowering for them.
I’m especially proud of the reputation my practice has developed for being a place where families feel truly supported, not judged. Parents often come in feeling overwhelmed, unsure how to help their child, and leave feeling more hopeful and connected. For me, the most meaningful part of this work is witnessing the transformation that happens when a child feels heard and understood—and the ripple effect that has on the whole family system.
In addition to working with children and teens, I also support college students as they navigate one of the most formative and sometimes overwhelming periods of their lives. Whether they’re dealing with academic pressure, identity development, mental health struggles, or navigating independence from their families, I provide a space where they can process these challenges and build resilience. My work with college students is focused on helping them feel grounded, confident, and emotionally supported as they transition into adulthood.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing my practice by adding qualified and well trained therapist and expanding the ways we can support children, teens, college students, and families. One of my goals is to offer more workshops and group sessions that focus on building emotional skills, improving parent-child communication, and helping young people feel more connected and understood. I’m also exploring ways to collaborate with schools and community organizations to make mental health support more accessible.
So while I’ll always love the one-on-one work, I’m definitely planning for broader impact and finding more creative ways to reach and support the members of the community.
