Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Henderson.
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Lake Havasu City, a small town in Arizona where I fell in love with music and I eventually took part in an exchange program to Italy where I went to a music high school before starting my first band in Flagstaff: Breakfast for Breakfast. I was on mushrooms when I came up with the band name. Sorry mom. You said go into as much detail as I’d like, right?
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hah! What a funny time to sit down to answer these questions. Has it been a smooth road? Some parts were surprisingly easy: getting paid work as an actor, establishing myself as a musician, building a network of support, those all happened for me. And yet, I had this feeling that something was wrong. So, with limiting myself to what I now say, I read Julia Campbell’s “The Artist’s Way” and it completely changed my life. All of the knots that my heart and mind had worked itself into are now untethered and, holy cow, you should try it. Me? Yes, you.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most proud of my ability to have found a career in finding my childhood again. I get to be a kid, with all of my vulnerabilities and expression both in my acting and music. It’s not my job to judge the work either. I just do, bring myself to it and let it go. It’s a beautiful meditation.
How do you define success?
To me, success is when something sits right with me. I find that when I choose my intuition and what I believe to be true, everything else will fall in line. When I follow my intuition and my intuition ends up being true, I find that to be successful, for example.
