Inspiring Conversations with Andrew Young of Elevated Mixing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Young.

Hi Andrew, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey as a producer/mixer started in 2016 when I decided that I needed to get some recording equipment just to record demos of songs I’ve been writing. Before this, I was working with other producers and engineers to get my music recorded and produced. As I was figuring out how to use the different softwares and recording gear, I was having so much fun and developed and obsession for wanting to get my recordings to sound better and better. Everyday, I was just at my desk learning more about the art of music production and trying to get better at it. Although I intended to just record simple demos of new songs I’ve written, my passion for the craft lead me to self produce, mix, and master one of my old EP’s called “Cocoon Days.” I was going by the artist name, Andrew Young back then. Making that EP gave me a sense of confidence to produce and mix music for other artists and bands. I wanted to eventually turn this into a job for myself but I knew I needed some more work on my portfolio/resume as a music producer. So I started offering my recording and mixing services to my friends who were artists and doing it all for free. I was open to recording anyone and anything! Eventually, some people were asking about my rates and even offering money for my services.
Fast Forward to 2020, when the pandemic hit, I wasn’t able to meet with people in person to work on music so I randomly decided to put my mixing and mastering services on freelance websites like Sound Better, Fiverr, and more. I was lucky enough to get consistent work on those platforms for me to leave my other jobs and only focus on doing mixing and mastering for clients. I even achieved the Top Seller status on one of the platforms. Currently, I’m still working with clients online and also producing and mixing music for other artists that want to work with me!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely many ups and downs along the way. I think the hardest part about this is the financial aspect of it. Sometimes, there is more than enough work coming in for me and I get a little overwhelmed with all the projects I need to do but there are also plenty of moments when there is no work coming in and it become an anxious time. I think a good way to spend those times when business is slow is to keep doing something that helps you move forward in anyway. I usually try to focus on posting content, working on my own music, or just catching up on personal things and relationships.
