Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Wester.
Hi Julia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since my last Voyager LA interview, I have started on a new adventure. I’m still being creative these days but in a little different capacity.
I started out as a Television Producer and even won an Emmy, but after a decade, I realized it no longer fulfilled me. While planning my wedding, I rediscovered my love for creating and made the bold decision to pivot careers at 30. I interned and worked for free to learn the ropes, which eventually led to a role with Joy Cho of Oh Joy!, where I became the in-house prop stylist and later Creative Content Director.
After seven amazing years, life shifted again—two kids and a pandemic put creative work on pause, so I started dyeing clothes for fun. That hobby turned into *Camp by Julia Wester*, a hand-dyed clothing brand that grew into collaborations and an online shop. After three years, I scaled back the shop and found myself back in the art world—this time at Meri Cherry Art Studio, where I’m now crafting, creating, and helping grow the brand as Brand Manager.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road – as hard as pandemic was, out of that struggle came something new: *Camp* was born as a creative outlet during a time of uncertainty but eventually realizing that I had to pull back a little bit from Camp was tough. It was hard to keep up while having a full time job. Eventually, I went back to producing for two years before landing where I am now—getting to use my creativity in a whole new way at a small, women-owned business I love and believe in, just as I did during my years at Oh Joy!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an all-around creative person.I don’t know if I would label me as one thing other than a Creative through and through. What I’m most proud of is the fact that I’m able to do so many different things from creating your DIY party backdrop to styling a room or art directing a photoshoot, producing video content, to creative business operations, and now creative brand managing.
What were you like growing up?
Oh man. I have always had so many ideas and so many things that I wanted to do. I love making and creating. As a kid I loved setting up a store in my room, I made clothes, I started so many businesses. I love events and putting parties together. I was always colorful in my art, personal style and taste. And now, as an adult, I don’t see that ever going away. Its in me.
