Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Trudell.
Gary, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My family has been building mattresses for most of my life, I’ve been surrounded by the business since I was a kid. My role has evolved over the thirty or so years we’ve been in business, but my main focus has always been to educate people about the importance of healthy sleep. As the business has grown, I’ve been able to really expand that knowledge to an incredible customer base.
When I brought our business to Los Angeles about nine years ago, I tapped into a luxury market filled with opportunity. Not only in selling our handcrafted, locally manufactured mattresses, but also in bringing awareness to the designers, athletes and celebrities of the area about the importance of sleep and what role a mattress plays in that. I’ve been able to personally fit clients, educate clients and help clients with major sleeping needs and improve lives on an individualized level which is ultimately what is most important to our message.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Really the main obstacle for us as a business has been keeping up with all the changes our suppliers have been going through over the years. All of our materials come from the United States and or California, our steel is from the US, our cotton is grown in California. It’s always been important to us to use local materials and support on a local level wherever we can.
This, unfortunately, is not the same direction most of the industry has moved in, so making sure our suppliers are in accordance with our values has been a challenge. A lot of manufacturing has moved overseas and the quality is just not the same, nor at a level, we would want to use in our product. We’ve had to shift a lot to accommodate the changes.
Please tell us about Custom Comfort Mattress.
Custom Comfort mattress is a Southern California based, family-owned business, manufacturing standard and custom mattresses of exceptional quality and comfort for nearly three decades. We take great pride in creating the finest handmade products for private residences, hotels, resorts, as well as, yachts, and aircraft.
We use only the finest natural materials and pair this with our classic upholstery techniques to produce mattresses that are comfortable, hygienic, luxurious, and durable. Each mattress is made in our local Southern California workshop reducing our carbon footprint, maintaining quality control, and reducing lead times, as well as, shipping costs. We maintain and elevate our craft by offering the most outstanding customer service.
I established our concierge service that includes full white glove delivery, in-home consultations, and measurements and am the main point of contact for all luxury clientele and designers. My goal is to create lasting relationships with each client by offering the best service from the moment I personally meet them, to the moment of the installation and after. It’s often after where I feel we can make the largest impact as client’s don’t always receive that full attention after the sale is complete, but with Custom Comfort, we take just as good care of them at any point during the life of the mattress.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m not saying by any means I’ve done it perfectly, but it’s where I’ve made mistakes that I’ve learned a lot, where we’ve all learned a lot as a business. We’ve evolved and grown the way we have because of the obstacles and situations that we’ve faced. It’s been a natural process and I believe letting it grow organically is what has kept challenging us and pushing us to be better.
