Check Out Talisha Cowin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talisha Cowin.

Talisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve drawn for as long as I can remember but selling your work is a different story altogether. It took a long time to really get into the stride of how to price and value my work.

When I started selling my work, I would sell my originals only and they were seriously undervalued, that was mainly because of how I was raised. Thank goodness in time I learned I could sell the images without selling my originals, in doing so I could sell the original work for higher.

I also took on new opportunities such as commissioned portraits of people/animals, mural work, and illustrating for books. This multitude of work allowed me to learn about new different processes and lead me closer to want I wanted to do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My road has been pretty bumpy. When you are taking on commissions, be it murals or even portraiture you have a client to please. Anytime you are
put to a task for another you stand a chance of their disapproval. I rarely run into this problem any more because communication is key. Even if I must ask a silly question, it could be the difference of hours of work in the future.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a traditional artist. I’d say I’m most proficient in acrylic and oil painting on canvas. I don’t limit myself to just that though I also enjoy water color, marker work and mix medium on different types of paper.

I enjoy Fine Arts and Pop Culture equally. So much so that I can’t help but do both. I find that Fine Arts matures my Pop Culture pieces and Pop Culture loosens up my Fine Arts work. They are two sides of a coin and it works for me.

What sets me apart from others is probably my love for nostalgia and color. It’s so wonderful being able to connect others without speaking. The art becomes a friend because it’s a happy memory. It’s beautiful to watch people light up when they think of happy times.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Value yourself. There will always be people who try to bring you down for their own means but be patient and the right people will come.

Also, don’t let Fear render you. Most of the time it’s only you stopping yourself from progress. You have to take chances.
