Today we’d like to introduce you to Gio Contreras.
Hi Gio, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always wanted to be a creator/influencer since back in high school. I moved to California from Georgia a few years ago, and started training in dance while getting to network and meet a lot of new people. My time as a creator/influencer started a few years back in the most unexpected way. I was out with my family to eat dinner at a local Denny’s where I suddenly ran into @TwistedPennywise aka Michael Taeza, a creator who I have been following for a while. I always thought his videos were hilarious and loved how he presented his content through Halloween expressions and being a parody of a scary character. My mother then told me to walk up to him and ask to take a picture, but I respectfully declined because I told her it was really nice to see him in person, and I did not want to be a bother. She then walks up to him herself, asks for a picture, and calls me and my younger brother over. I couldn’t decline the moment because it was already presented to me, so when I walked up to him and took pictures, we chatted for a while. He then follows me on social media and asked me if I danced, I replied to him and said I do and its one of my passions. Michael then asked me if I wanted to fill in for some videos he’s doing since he needed a dancing parody of “Jason Voorhees” from the Friday the 13th franchise. I was so excited I agreed. After filling in for some of his videos, he saw the determination in my eyes and how passionate I was in making content as well, he suggested I make my own account and inspired me saying it would do really well. He has helped me a lot and I now consider him to be one of my closest friends I’ve made here in LA. I started my tiktok in 2022 as @Officialjasonv and over time I evolved my content, and even changed my costume, incorporating aspects of my own persona and character to be the parody of the Jason Voorhees which ultimately evolved into who I am today, @jasonvoorheezy. In 2024 I did an unmasking or what everyone calls a “face reveal” to further introduce myself to everyone. I now incorporate aspects of both me and Voorheezy to merge the 2 characters and show people that both of them cannot exist without one another.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road over the years. It took me some time to understand how the algorithm of each platform for social media works, and I am still currently learning. My schedule also tends to be very packed so I sometimes struggle with LA traffic getting through my daily work and content routines I have to do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My daily job is an IT Specialist for a company, but I am known for being Jason Voorheezy on social media, the digital creator / Influencer that dances as a parody of the character from the Friday the 13th franchise. I specialize in dance, comedy/parody, and horror content and skits. I am most proud of taking a big step in taking the role of Voorheezy because I was afraid my account would not do well. But I utilize my multiple talents to keep it up and keep my viewers smiling. What sets me apart from others is my willingness to grind, not being afraid of challenges or hurdles, and consistency even through the dips and lows of the times.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My view on risk taking can vary, but I tend to be stubborn and take some high-risk, high reward things in life. I tend to push for success until I get it because I was always a fighter. What I believed before was a major risk was revealing my identity as Voorheezy, because I thought that it would affect my content in a different way. But over time, I learned that it helps me network with more brands and people I collaborate with in the industry, and opens so many avenues for my social media platforms to grow.
