Life & Work with Demè “Meech” Justice of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demè “Meech” Justice.

Hi Demè “Meech”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always say, “Meech Justice is the one they know. Demè Just is the one they’ll never forget.” My story began with a deep love for people and purpose — I’ve always had a heart for helping others find their voice, even when I was still learning to use my own. I started off behind the scenes, connecting dots, building bridges, and creating space for authenticity in every room I entered. “Meech Justice” became that trusted presence — a name that meant connection, transparency, and impact.

But with time, I realized I wasn’t just a connector. I was a creator. And so, Demè Just was born — the artist, the storyteller, the one unafraid to stand in the light. Demè is where my vulnerability meets vision. It’s the evolution of a journey rooted in faith, healing, and intentional growth. Everything I’ve experienced — the silence, the scars, the success — it all built the foundation for who I am today. I didn’t change — I revealed.

Now, I get to blend it all: the bridge-builder and the creative, the heart and the art. And that’s how I got here — by never giving up on becoming the most honest version of myself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Smooth? Not at all. But necessary? Absolutely. The road’s been filled with detours, delays, and moments where I wasn’t sure I’d make it. I’ve had to confront abandonment, loss, betrayal — and perhaps the hardest of all, the battle within myself. There were seasons I was pouring into others while silently bleeding. Times I was praised publicly and breaking privately.

The struggle was learning how to be seen and still feel invisible. But through therapy, faith, and a deep commitment to healing, I found strength in the breaking. I survived things I wasn’t supposed to — spiritually, emotionally, even physically — and that gave me a new language. A new lens. Every scar turned into a symbol, every “no” became direction, and every setback taught me to lean deeper into the source: God, purpose, and self.

So no, it hasn’t been smooth. But I don’t think greatness is meant to be easy. It’s meant to be earned. And I’ve earned every piece of who I am now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a storyteller in every sense of the word — whether it’s through writing, speaking, curating, or simply existing. My work lives at the intersection of art, healing, and legacy. I specialize in telling the truth — sometimes the uncomfortable kind — and I use whatever medium will carry that truth the furthest: a poem, a chapter, a conversation, or a full-body performance. Demè is fluid because life is. And I move through it with reverence, range, and rhythm.

I’m known for my transparency — not just the kind that looks good on paper, but the kind that helps people feel seen in their silence. As a writer, I give language to the moments people thought no one would understand. As an artist, I time-travel. I’m a teacher of the past, a mirror for the present, and a blueprint for the future. My work honors where we’ve been, holds space for where we are, and dares to dream where we’re going.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to remain human — to create from a place of depth, not ego. To speak from the soul, not the surface. What sets me apart isn’t just what I do, but how I do it. I’m not chasing a moment — I’m building a movement. One rooted in faith, freedom, and full expression

Storytelling and impact have always gone hand in hand for me—writing, speaking, curating, performing—they’re all channels for truth. But I wanted to move beyond storytelling into systemic change. That’s why I founded @BlackMenInMedia, a nonprofit and movement designed to amplify Black men’s voices across every platform—TV, film, journalism, digital, and beyond.

I launched @BlackMenInMedia because right now more than ever, representation matters. Too often Black men are pigeonholed by stereotypes or completely silenced. I knew that if I could create a community—an ecosystem of mentorship, training, commissioning, and celebration—we could shift the narrative from the margins to the mainstream. We provide:
• Mentorship & Fellowship Programs to connect emerging talent with seasoned pros
• Story Labs & Writers’ Rooms where Black men develop scripts, articles, and campaigns
• Industry Showcases that put our work in front of decision‑makers

What I’m most proud of isn’t the fancy panels or conferences, but seeing a young man land his first staff writer gig on a network show, or watching a documentary he produced spark a national conversation.

This nonprofit is both my greatest work and my biggest classroom. It teaches me humility—reminding me that leadership is service—and renews my belief that collective creativity can rewrite history.

What sets me apart? I don’t just tell stories—I build the stages they’re performed on. I don’t just teach lessons—I create the curricula. And I don’t just imagine a better future for Black men in media—I’m equipping them to claim it today.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
If I had to name the single quality driving everything I do, it’d be authenticity—the courage to show up as my full self, every single time.

When you lead with authenticity, you build trust. You give people permission to drop their masks and meet you in your truth. That honesty fuels every creative choice I make—whether I’m writing a poem, mentoring a filmmaker in our @BlackMenInMedia labs, or stepping onto a stage. It’s what turns a name into a movement and a message into a mission.

Authenticity also anchors resilience. When you know who you are—your values, your scars, your gifts—you can weather rejection, criticism, even failure, without losing your center. It reminds me daily that my worth isn’t tied to applause or algorithms, but to the impact of real stories told real.

So yes: stay authentic. Be transparent. Let your vulnerability become your signature. That single decision—to honor your own voice above all else—is what transforms a career into a calling.
