Conversations with Nick Norton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Norton

Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born near the ocean approximately 13.6 billion years after the big bang. Sometime later I started playing guitar, then went to college for music and political philosophy, eventually earning a PhD as a composer. That’s not a lifestyle that western capital finds useful, though, so in order to pay my rent and eat I got into music and sound editing for film and TV. I have done a good bit of live sound too, and mixed a ton of recordings.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly the biggest struggle for me is living in the world we do while believing all people should be treated well. We should not have to go broke for basic services that most other countries provide, and we certainly should not be forced to fund genocide, legalized slavery, and further destruction of the planet, but the US likes to throw people who dodge taxes in jail so here we are.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make things out of sound. That most often means I am making music in some way or another, but sometimes it means I’m recording nature, mixing movies, or engineering concerts.

I’m proud of my record Music For Sunsets, which came out last year and got good reviews, and I’m working on the follow up now. I’m also extremely proud to have earned admission to the Motion Picture Editors Guild, and to have been appointed to their Emerging Technology Committee.

I’m not sure pride is the right word for this, because it’s something everyone should do, but I feel good when I help people out in some way. That’s a big part of how I try to live.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m really pretty into Fantasy Football and also never really liked Minor Threat or Fugazi. Respect, but not for me.
