Today we’d like to introduce you to Juanita Wilson.
Hi Juanita, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sure! Currently, I’m a film student and a freelance producer. My journey really started with a love for storytelling as a child — I’ve always dreamed of making movies. I started in acting, which gave me my first hands-on experience in front of the camera and helped me understand the creative process from a performer’s perspective. Over time, my passion shifted behind the scenes, and I found myself drawn to production — being able to help bring stories to life from start to finish. That love for storytelling and creating opportunities for others led me to producing. Now, I’m focused on sharpening my skills in film school while working on independent projects, building my portfolio, and continuing to grow as a creative in this industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth ride. Like many journeys in film, mine has had its fair share of bumps along the way. One of the biggest challenges came with my first feature film, where I stepped into the roles of Executive Producer and Producer. Navigating the responsibilities of leading a project on that scale—while still learning and growing—was both exciting and overwhelming. From budgeting hurdles to finding the right team and managing logistics, I had to learn a lot through trial and error. But every obstacle taught me something valuable and made me more confident in my abilities moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a freelance Producer and film student, I specialize in bringing stories to life from concept to completion. I’ve worked on a variety of projects — from short films to independent features — and I’m passionate about creating stories that reflect culture, emotion, and real-life experiences, especially within the Black community.
I’m most proud of my growth as a Producer — taking the leap from acting to being behind the scenes and leading productions has been one of my biggest accomplishments. I’m especially proud of my first feature film as an Executive Producer and Producer — it challenged me, stretched me, and confirmed that this is where I belong.
What sets me apart is my ability to see the bigger picture while staying grounded in the details. I love building teams, fostering collaboration, and creating a positive environment on set. I bring heart, creativity, and resilience to every project I touch. At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller — and I’m committed to producing work that not only entertains but also inspires and impacts audiences
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that taking risks is an essential part of growth, especially in the film industry. Whether it’s stepping into a new role, starting a project with limited resources, or investing in a story you believe in — there’s always a level of uncertainty. But with risk comes opportunity.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was producing my first feature film. As both an Executive Producer and Producer, I had to make tough decisions, manage a tight budget, and fully commit to the vision — even when things got difficult. Investing in film, whether with time, energy, or money, is always a gamble. You’re putting everything into a project that may or may not succeed. But for me, the reward is in the impact — if the story moves someone, connects with them, or sparks a conversation, it’s worth it.
I may not consider myself a natural risk-taker, but I’ve learned that in this industry, you can’t grow without a little discomfort. Sometimes the biggest risks lead to the most meaningful wins
