Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Correia.
Hi Danielle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my sugaring journey back in 2006, looking for more holistic ways to care for my skin—methods that were not only eco-friendly but also free from harmful chemicals. I opened my first sugaring studio in Charleston, South Carolina, called Sweet 185. After two years, I successfully sold that studio to a lovely woman who still operates it to this day.
Eventually, I found myself in Santa Monica. Funny enough, I started sugaring out of my apartment just off Montana Avenue. This was right around the time Yelp was gaining traction, and before I knew it, I had clients showing up at 7 AM, every 20 minutes. I had a morning crew, a lunchtime crowd, and an after-work rush—it all built up organically until I was completely maxed out. That’s when sugaringLA was born, with our first official location on Euclid and Montana.
A few years later, we opened in Manhattan Beach, followed by a studio in Carlsbad—my hometown in the San Diego area—and then West Hollywood. In 2022, I partnered with a company called Franworth to grow the brand into a national franchise. Our vision? To become the Whole Foods of hair removal. We wanted to make high-quality sugaring accessible across the country, in an inclusive, welcoming environment, and to expand our organic skincare line nationwide.
Our mission is to make sugaring the go-to for hair removal—and to educate you about why it’s time to break up with waxing!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d definitely say there have been struggles along the way, but I’ve learned that if you use every challenge as an opportunity to educate yourself and make the necessary changes, then you’re on the right path.
2020 was especially tough for us in L.A. When nearly 40% of businesses didn’t reopen their doors, we were shut down for 11 months—only able to take clients during a few short windows. It was brutal. But during that time, we were reminded just how essential sugaring is. For people with eczema, psoriasis, or PCOS, this isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
That year also reinforced something else for me: when you stay flexible, pivot quickly, and focus on what you can control, you can still make incredible things happen. While our studios were closed, we poured our energy into product development and our Sugaring at Home Kit, which kept us incredibly busy. That work paid off—Free People even picked up a few of our products to sell on their site.
So despite the difficulties, we’ve continued to grow—and now we’re facing a whole new set of challenges as we expand the franchise system. But these are the challenges we’re prepared to take head-on. This is how you shape your systems and optimize them—by learning, adapting, and never losing sight of your mission.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At SugaringLA, we offer customized sugaring services for all ages, all skin types, and all hair textures—anywhere on the body—in a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment. We focus solely on sugaring hair removal because we believe in doing one thing and doing it exceptionally well. Paired with our elevated, organic skincare line—made from simple, trusted ingredients—our clients know they’re receiving the highest quality care. Every service is designed to be quick, effective, and consistent, with results they can count on every time.
What I’m most proud of, though, is our incredible team. We’re a predominantly female-owned and operated business, and being able to empower so many women through meaningful careers is one of the greatest parts of this journey. We’ve created a workplace that offers not only exceptional training and growth opportunities, but also flexible schedules, competitive pay, and healthcare benefits—something that’s still rare in our industry, but should be the standard.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Los Angeles—especially Santa Monica—is how easy it is to live a healthy lifestyle. I can grab a nourishing meal, a green juice, hit a yoga class, and sneak in an infrared sauna session, all within just a few blocks. It’s that kind of accessibility to wellness that really fuels me and inspires a lot of what we do at sugaringLA
.
And of course, I’d be speaking for most Angelenos when I say the traffic is definitely the downside.
