Today we’d like to introduce you to Souleye Treadway.
Hi Souleye, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Souleye, a conscious hip-hop artist based in Los Angeles. My journey into music began with a deep passion for poetry and rhythm, which eventually led me to win the Relix Magazine contest in 2003. This pivotal moment propelled me into touring and, for a time, I served as the lead singer for a San Francisco-based band. Over the years, I’ve released 13 records, each reflecting my evolution as an artist and individual. My path has been guided by a free-spirited approach, allowing art and intuition to lead the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been shaped by profound loss and transformative healing. Losing my best friend to cancer and my older brother to suicide were seismic events that cracked open my world. In the aftermath, I found solace in movement — spending nearly a decade traveling from Mount Shasta to West Palm Beach, often couch-surfing, writing rhymes daily, and connecting with kindred spirits along the way. These experiences became the foundation of my music and personal growth.
Growing up with both parents struggling with alcoholism introduced chaos early in my life. Yet, it also ignited a deep desire to break generational cycles and seek healing. This path led me to explore various therapeutic modalities, plant medicine, and spiritual practices, all anchored in love and self-discovery. These elements are not just part of my personal journey but are intricately woven into my music and the spaces I create for others.
Today, I channel these experiences into my art, aiming to offer authenticity and healing through my music. Whether performing on stage or hosting events like Souleye Fest, I strive to create environments where others can find connection, inspiration, and a sense of belonging.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a conscious hip-hop artist known for blending poetic lyricism with experimental beats, spiritual insight, and emotional depth. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve toured extensively — from Israel to Fiji, and everywhere in between.
I’m love creating it fills my heart being in the moment. I’ve released over 13 records while staying true to my that, message, and evolution.
I’m guided by art and spirit, and that shines through in the music, the stage presence, and how I connect with audiences.
Alongside my music career, I’ve also had the honor of supporting my wife, Alanis Morissette, on tour while raising our three incredible children. Balancing fatherhood, creativity, and partnership has added a deeper sense of purpose to everything I do.
A huge part of my recent focus is Souleye Fest, a community-driven celebration of community building, healing, art and music.
After launching last year in Palm Springs, it returns this year on April 26 in Hollywood with an expanded vision of performances, ceremonies, and curated vendor experiences.
It’s more than a concert — it’s a living, breathing reflection of everything I stand for as an artist and human being.
How do you think about happiness?
Happiness, for me, is rooted in family, friends, and community. It’s found in the simple joys of creating music, staying grounded in health and fitness, and connecting with others on a meaningful, heart-centered level. Whether I’m writing lyrics at sunrise, laughing with my kids, or performing on stage, I’m most fulfilled when I’m fully present — body, mind, and spirit.
After years of touring, supporting my wife Alanis on global stages, and raising our three children, I’ve come to see happiness not as a destination, but as a rhythm — something you align with daily. It lives in rituals, in vulnerability, in art that heals. Hosting events like Souleye Fest has deepened that sense of joy by creating space for others to feel seen, inspired, and connected.
It’s the blend of purpose, presence, and play that keeps me lit up — and that’s the energy I bring into everything I do.
