Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Huizar.
Hi Jose, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey in the world of fashion at a very young age, around six years old. Growing up in South Central Watts, I faced various challenges, but I found solace and expression in design. Using my creativity became a way to stay out of trouble and channel my energy into something positive.
After years of honing my skills, I decided to launch my own brand, Bad Burro, in 2020. The name comes from the nickname my father gave me as a kid nickname “burro,” which came from being travieso . The pandemic provided a unique backdrop for launching the brand; while many faced uncertainty, I saw an opportunity to create something meaningful.
Through hard work, dedication, and a passion for fashion, I started to gain recognition for my designs. My goal has always been to blend streetwear with a sense of individuality, reflecting my roots and the diverse culture of Los Angeles. Today, I continue to grow Bad Burro, striving to inspire others to embrace their creativity and overcome challenges through fashion. Each piece I create tells a story, and I’m excited to share that journey with the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Becoming the designer I am today wasn’t easy. I tend to break the rules in fashion by creating genderless and extravagant clothing. I wear makeup, which some say isn’t masculine enough. When they challenge me on that, I ask them to define masculinity. Some have told me they preferred the old me, the more masculine version. I’ve lost friends along the way, and there are times when I get lonely. But I’ve learned that less is more. At the end of the day, I’m still the same person. I’m not afraid to pursue my dreams, and I understand that not everyone will be part of my journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating genderless and extravagant clothing that challenges traditional fashion norms. My work focuses on blending streetwear with unique designs that allow for self-expression, regardless of gender. I’m known for my bold use of colors, patterns, and unexpected elements that make each piece stand out.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to inspire others to embrace their individuality and break free from societal expectations. I strive to create a space where everyone feels represented and valued in fashion.
What sets me apart from others is my commitment to authenticity and my willingness to push boundaries. I don’t shy away from incorporating makeup and unconventional styles, which encourages dialogue about masculinity and self-identity. My designs are not just clothing; they are a celebration of diversity and creativity, reflecting my journey and the stories of those who wear them.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Watching all the seasons of Project Runway has been a huge source of inspiration for me. Seeing the amazing designers push their limits, showcase their creativity, and navigate challenges really fuels my passion for fashion. Their journeys remind me of the importance of innovation and resilience in this industry. Each episode reinforces my belief that there’s always room to experiment and grow as a designer, motivating me to continue pursuing my own unique vision.
